This is one of the grand dames of Amsterdam. Originally called Hotel American, it has been updated while still keeping the charm of the original. Near the Leidseplein and a number of tram lines, it is close enough to many attractions while avoiding the very busy Central Station area.
The room was spacious with a king bed. Large TV, blutooth speaker, frig and modern bath made for a comfortable stay. Daily service was prompt and thorough. Stayed a week and would return. One small detail that was out of place in an otherwise complete set up was a lack of clock in the bedroom, a given in US hotels.
We loved this hotel. Close to the tram, food and shopping. The perfect spot. The room was spacious and clean and so charming. We would stay here again.
The staff were very helpful and welcoming and it’s in a great location. But..
The hotel is a little run down, it definitely needs some tlc in lots of areas.
Decor is very dark.
Shower water pressure is poor.

Beautiful hotel but needs some TLC
Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Some issues we faced was the fact the room was very dark and needs more light, especially over the vanity area. The towels were a disgrace and need to be replaced asap. On cool days the heat in room never adequately heated it. The thermostat was locked and could not be moved to a higher
temperature. The room stayed cold and uncomfortable.
The American Cafe restaurant was very good.
The design of our mini suite has a major flaw: a big room is used for only a bath tub only and does not even put a chair in there, totally wasting a lot of room. Early check in needs to pay extra 276 euros. Location is perfect. Note that if early departure is needed, guests might need to go to the other side of the canal to be picked up by uber.
Enjoyed our stay at the Clayton Amsterdam, the excellent staff were very friendly and attentive. The hotel building is attractive and in good condition and the rooms are modern and comfortable. The area is central and on tram and bus routes so very accessible. Leidseplein is lively at night so there was some noise from late night revellers.
If I had to nitpick, the only downside was that on the balcony some of the floor tiles were wobbly. But overall, it was a minor issue in an otherwise excellent stay.
