Beautiful building but discriminatory policies
The hotel profile says "parking available". The website has a whole page devoted to parking. But they don't tell you that it's 75 a night. Nor that they make no concessions at all to disabled drivers. We were told we could park in a public car park a 400m walk away for 40 a day but with mobility issues, that wasn't a solution for us. We complained and after much heated discussion, we were promised a discount when the hotel manager came in on the Monday but in the end no such discount was offered, by which time our car had been in the car park for 2 nights. Profiteering, pure and simple. The hotel admits that it discriminates against disabled people in its practises ("we treat all guests the same", which is tantamount to discrimination and breaches Dutch law in failing to make reasonable accommodation for disabled customers) and justifies its position on the basis that to park on the street costs €150/day. Also, if you find steps difficult (we don't, fortunately), the disabled entrance is in a separate area and on the whole, the hotel really isn't suitable for you. It's a real shame because the building is an absolute delight - which is why we have given 2 stars. It's an early Art Deco gem and if you love that design, this is the place for you. The details on the interior in particular are worth seeing. Also the room was wonderful but there's no a/c, be warned. It's just a shame about the service and the policies of the management, which ruined the experience for us.

Nice hotel, most staff helpful, some not! Wouldn’t rate as a 5 star hotel. Our suite was dark and quite unkept and no proper air conditioning. Not worth the money we spent, but we still had a great time!

The hotel is magnificent. We just loved being in an old historical building with tall ceilings and tall windows. The common areas are so beautiful. It was just wonderful. We are planning on coming back to Amsterdam for a longer stay and we will return to Grand Hotel Amrath.

Top choice for Amsterdam
This was a fantastic hotel and I highly recommend staying there if you are in Amsterdam. A short walk from the Central train station and close to everything. The staff and amenities are all top notch. Great option if you are looking for one.

The amenities were very good. The architecture of the building was impressive and historical however the building needs a little maintenance. The bedroom door was stuck and noisy every time you opened it. Same for the neighbors on the same floor. The sink didn’t drain well. The issues were mentioned few times to the front desk but no action was done. The bed was poorly made. One side was tucked in and the other side hanging. Not a five star hotel but surely 3.

a royal gem of a hotel!
This hotel is one of the most charming hotels I have ever stayed in! Just like the name, the hotel is grand in scale & design and cozy at the same time. The staff are very helpful and welcoming, and the location is excellent (a few minutes work from the train station and close enough to both the tourist section of Amsterdam and east Amsterdam).

The hotel was beautiful and unique but obviously old. We had a few problems come up while there, and though the staff was nice and appeared concerned, nothing was ever really done to fix or follow up on problems, except for changing one of our rooms due to a broken television, though the new room appeared much smaller yet we were told it was still a deluxe. We also had staff/someone come to our 2 rooms on three occasions and enter without consent around 7pm, one time spooking my kid who was in the room by himself while we were downstairs, and another when my sister was nude. Initially, management said this was not normal and that they would look to see in their database who had entered. No follow up and when we brought it up to them again, they acted like it was no big deal and it was likely “down service” or housekeeping replacing items; which we know was not the case as all had already been replaced and no where does it say anything about down service. The spa was nice but the steam room was broken. We had one executive suite and one deluxe room, as they told us we could not have more than 3 in the executive suite, which we could have as it was three big rooms; though there was only one bed, a useless room with a desk and chairs, and a sitting area with a dining table and couch with two chairs. The couch was not a pull out so we had to purchase a rollaway bed. Never offered anything to accommodate the issues we incurred. Definitely not worth the cost!!
