The Lion is a much extended old coaching inn, with all the ongoing maintenance issues and rambling layout that implies. Its strongpoint is its location and car parking. Rooms are generously sized, and staff chirpy, though not necessarily blessed with the training and discipline you might expect in a corporate hotel chain. The included continental breakfast is very acceptable, and if you want something cooked, it is not expensive. The Lion is right nextdoor to a Jet filling station, which is not very picturesque, and rooms at the front are over the bar, and next to the A6, so some noise. Take care if rooms at the back are offered, as some are over the hospitality areas where wedding receptions and private parties are often held at the weekend. A rousing chorus of "It's raining men" can be a little trying if you weren't invited to the party, and want to be asleep before midnight.... But it works for us, so we'll be back.....

Room for improvement
My fourth stay at the Lion as there aren’t many other options in the local area. Staff are pleasant and the bar offer's a good evening meal menu. However as before, I was completely unable to connect to wifi. Didn’t bother asking reception as their solutions in the past never worked. Also found the room too warm and noise was an issue, especially with window open. Thirdly, continental breakfast was meagre to say the least, so paid £9.50 for cooked option.

Generally clean but tired in terms of decor and requires updating. Toilet had a crack. Good hot shower. Service friendly and welcoming. Continental Breakfast poor offerings as nothing left hardly after an hour.

Great Place to Stay.
Very friendly and welcoming. Room was nice and comfortable. Good choices for breakfast both cooked and continental style. We also had our evening meals at the Hotel and there was a good choice and it was well presented. Staff friendly and accommodating. Located in the Town Centre about 100 yards from the Railway Station and Bus Station. Convenient for trips to Chatsworth and Peak District.

Good location for travelling by train, 5 minute walk from Belper Station. Food was very good in the restaurant.Main complaint is about the cleaning staff holding early daily meetings on a landing outside rooms, conversations very clear from inside the room, these meetings should not be held here where they can wake guests.

This is more like a pub with rooms than a hotel with a bar / restaurant so if you manage your expectations, you won't be disappointed. There's easy free parking, room was spatious, bed was comfy, shower was quite good, dinner was nice and staff were great. Cooked breakfast was a bit disappointing and there was some traffic noise (as noted in the hotel info) but I quite enjoyed my stay.

A very comfortable hotel convenient for the Peak District. Although it's on the main road, it was quiet at night and it was easy to find with plenty of parking. Our room was large and clean and the bed very comfortable. We had an excellent supper in the bar and the continental breakfast was more than enough.

Always a fabulous stay at The Lion. Staff always friendly and welcoming. A lovely busy place with a great atmosphere. The location is good for exploring Belper and it's numerous pubs, bars and restaurants. Only very slight downside is the room is tired. Very clean though
