The room on the first day smelled horrible because it was freshly painted with oil based paint. The hotel was only at 40% occupancy but our room was not ready at 3pm. After running the AC in the room, it started to smell musty or mildew. When you opened the room door from the hall, the smell would hit you. Both my husband and I got sick. The buffet is extremely lack luster. This is the first resort in the area where I have been where the servers and bartenders do not know English. I understand we were in Mexico but usually the service staff is able to speak English so it made dining and ordering drinks difficult. The bartenders at the swim up bar lacked personality. It almost seemed like you were causing them an inconvenience by asking them for a drink. We were just at the Finest Costa Mujeres in May and I would gladly spend the extra money the next time to avoid the Catalonia. The money saved was not worth the terrible food and service.

I’ve visited Cancun several times and always had great experiences, but unfortunately, this stay was very disappointing from the moment we arrived. The staff was not welcoming or helpful, and the overall attitude felt indifferent at best. We were a group of 20 people, and it felt like we were just an inconvenience rather than guests. The food was by far the worst part — the buffet was extremely limited, repetitive, and poorly maintained. On Saturday evening, there was almost nothing left by dinner time, and several members of my family didn’t get to eat. For an all-inclusive resort, this was completely unacceptable. The à la carte restaurant was also unimpressive and lacked variety. Drinks were just okay, but the beer was consistently warm. As for the smoking policy, when booked this resort it mentioned having a smoking area. However, smokers in our group were forced to leave the resort entirely to smoke, and the staff was unnecessarily rude about it. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. I’ve stayed at other all-inclusives in Cancun that offered much better service, food, and hospitality. We couldn’t wait for the trip to end, which is a shame because we were looking forward to a relaxing getaway. Would not return, and I do not recommend it.

The stay was amazing. The room we picked was privileged and it gave us access to a separate dining room, beach beds and bars. The restaurant options were good, I wish there was more options for dinner. We loved the italian and the steakhouse. The spa was also amazing and we were gifted a free couple massage in our package. The hotel is very organized, staff is friendly and helpful at all the time. The room service is available 27/7 but I wish they had more options of food. The pool in our room was dirty and it had so much bugs and iguana poop. There’s iguanas everywhere so don’t be scared, we had one in our pool every day. Upon arrival we also got a bowl of fruits and champagne and chocolate. There’s bars everywhere too and the drinks are good! They serve you at the beach as well, and there’s like 2 bars and a juice bar which was really fresh and good. I recommend people looking for transportation because the hotel is 45 minutes from the airport, and they dont offer shuttle, but the uber is cheap and the hotel is very secure while letting people in or out. I would book this hotel again.

Got sick the second day here. Staff is less than helpful. God forbids you try and get to the pool early you’ll get harassed by the workers they will take your stuff and put them in lost and found. Terrible tequila unless you are travelers club. Pool service has got to be the worst we have encountered in all of Mexico. Will never come to this place again.

This was amazing! The resort itself was absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere was clean and modern. The beach was amazing with plenty of chairs and shade. The food and drinks were 10/10, as well as the staff. It was clean and relaxing. Will be back!

Overall my family & I had a great time at Catalonia. The grounds are beautiful, pools are very nice, and the hotel overall is aesthetically beautiful. Rooms for improvement include: possible bottled water in rooms instead of a refillable glass water container — I think the water was bothering my husband’s stomach. Also, a “less sweet” mix for the drinks. I also requested room service that never arrived. My request was simply completed out with no communication on why.

I wish the restrooms in the personal rooms and in common areas had AC. Walking in from the heat and humidity and still feeling all that heat was a disappointment in such a beautiful resort.
