Downton Abby Experience--dont look at it-live it!
Downton Abbey Experience. The host (owner) emphasized it is an "ancestral home." They treated us like the Downton Abbey television show that portrays the 1920's -- without the dressed up staff. Diner was a must for the experience. They treated us like Aunts and Uncles coming to visit. Drinks before dinner in the library.... four course dinner.. drinks after in the library or drawing room. The land is so big that we took a 2 km (one hour round trip) through a path in the forest--- and was still on Clonalis House land. I retired two years ago and have been traveling since. We have stayed in over a dozen four and five star hotels -- including Ashford Castle. This is our favorite stay of all. Admittedly we did watch "Downton Abbey" so we got into the whole vibe. My advice to fans of the show --- don't go LOOK AT Downton Abby stay at Clonalis House for the experience of a lifetime. Remember not a "hotel" but an "Ancestral House." Ps they owned land for 600 years... house in new... if new is the 1800's. Dinner expensive... but a must.

This property is very pretty and unique. The staff were not welcoming and it was a bit uncomfortable. Lots of rules on property that we are not used to when staying at a guest house.

Beautiful, spacious, and comfortable rooms. The food was fantastic, and we really enjoyed the historical tour that we booked too. We met both owners and they were very gracious and welcoming, making sure we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Our only regret is we only had one day there!

Fabulous place to stay in wonderful Roscommon....
Absolutely fabulous stay here last weekend. Thank you so much Richard and Carol-Anne for some amazing hospitality. We will for sure be back. Fabulous location and food. We stayed in the Green Room - fabulous views over the parkland and bed was so comfy. After a truly stressful year was so good to grab 2 nights away here in Clonalis. Loved the walks around the house and the opportunity to recharge.

Clonalis House is a unique time capsule of Irish history, a family home that welcomes visitors to share the peaceful & historic gem that has been in the O Connor clan for 24 generations. The family are welcoming and generous with their hospitality, gin&tonics in the library lined with an extraordinary collection of books in front of a peat fire. Breakfast is delicious & high quality ingredients include home made blackberry jam & marmalade in gorgeous sunny breakfast room. We took the house tour with history student Alannah which was fascinating, esp the manuscript room where there were documents from as early as the Brehan laws right up to informal letters from president of Ireland Douglas Hyde to the then owners of Clonalis Hse. We also enjoyed walking the working farmlands in the morning full of mature trees and undisturbed nature. If you enjoy tranquility and relaxing with a book or meeting fascinating people this is the place to go back in time and be properly spoiled in comfort
