We got there after 5:30 which was a bad idea. In winter it was already pitch black and the walk from the bus stop to the hotel is uphill and very challenging with luggage. I don’t even know how we did it!
Hotel itself is pretty good. Breakfast and dinner provided, bathrobes provided and you can wear to dinner, onsen open 24 hours. No view in the room but you’re close to the gorgeous lake. Small eats around town are amazing, cream puff, pork bowl 豚井, potato mochi... Be ware of the black crows; they’re very aggressive if you have food exposed in a plate!
Go to 丸驹温泉 via shuttle bus (ask hotel front desk to arrange it for you), super worth it! It’s the most scenic onsen with 100+ years of history.
I have been travelling in Hokkaido for almost a month (and longer in Japan) and stayed in very nice hotels. This place beats all of them hands down. The next level of excellent would be extraordinary. So I rate extraordinary: the staff (special mention), the location and its ambience, the quality of the food and its presentation. All this is not meant as 5* international (which I don't like much), but a place with a homely feel and great service that is genuine.
I enjoyed my stay very much! Excellent staff and comfortable environment! The basic dinner set was much better than I was expected! Breakfast will be better if more varieties are available, e.g. sashimi don etc. Onsen facilities are only basic ones. The room was spacious and nice! Overall speaking, I would recommend this hotel for those who would like to have a budgeted hotel with onsen in Shikotsuko Lake.
I really really enjoyed my stay at Kyukamura! I was up in Hokkaido for the Yuki Matsuri in Sapporo and decided to stay at Lake Shikotsu. I'm so glad I did. I actually enjoyed the ice festival at Lake Shikotsu more than the Yuki Matsuri in Sapporo. The whole town is really happy to have people come there in the winter.
I landed at Chitose arpt and took the bus to Shikotsu. (This was the most difficult aspect of staying out here. There is very limited bus service and it is very expensive if you are commuting into Sapporo or to Otaru for day trips.) I got off the bus and was instantly greeted by a Kyukamura staff with a shuttle to the hotel. Check-in was easy and the room was so clean. Changed into yukata and went for a delicious meal in the lobby. If I can say one thing that impressed me the most: THE STAFF IS THE BEST! Everything is cared for and you are made to feel as comfortable as possible. I speak limited Japanese but it was enough to communicate with everyone. Everyone was so helpful and respectful!
It's very easy to walk into town. Maybe 10-15 min depending on your pace. Definitely go during the day because the views are spectacular! The ice festival is incredible to see during the day.
I believe when you travel to another country it is always good to learn and respect local customs. When in the shared bath: WASH YOURSELF BEFORE GETTING IN. When it is past 10pm don't yell in the halls etc.
Fantastic place and I want to come again in the summer!
