Although a bit rustic and somewhat hard to find, it is superbly situated inside the South Gate of Ancient Dali and a great value. It is very clean and comfortable, has what I would consider some Japanese touches, and where else can you sit in a modern bathtub gazing out the windows at the Himalayan foothills?
Terrible experience.
First the worst -- the alley where the hotel sits is under construction. And I mean raw sewage running just next to its door, no passage without going through mud and sand. Foul stench. This is completely unacceptable and the hotel should be closed while this is going on. Fortunately we had backpacks but I can only imagine going through this construction with heavy trolleys. It must be a nightmare.
Then there is no reception, and thus this should not be called a hotel but rather a B&B (without breakfast). The were waiting for us when we arrived, but for example when we left nobody was to be found. Staff spoke no english and communication was a challenge even with google translator.
They first showed us a room in the top floor which was completely inadequate. The walls looked damaged and the room seemed damp and dirty. They then put us in the room just to the right of when you enter the property which was better. Still not entirely clean, you could find women's hair all over. The layout and restroom functionality were not good either.
Dali itself is a commercial tacky town and that also didn't help although I am discounting this as BoNan people cannot be at fault for being located in a bad city.
On the positive the staff, despite not speaking any english, seemed eager to help and to smoothen issues. But they are not trained to provide this service and when i mentioned the construction and how bad it was they laughed.
Prior to arriving in Dali, Hazel contacted me and asked if I needed any preparations for Dali. She arranged for a shared cab for me all the way from Kunming airport(4 hours away). We only stayed in Dali for 2 nights and I wished we had stayed longer. The homestay was sufficient for all our needs. The only thing is that we were quite cold because it was winter and there was no centralized heat. Nonetheless, Hazel accommodated everything we needed (she even helped us figure out how to buy train tickets to tour next location). The morning we left, she was there to send us off and had gotten us Chinese bao and hot soy bean milk to go. Additionally she gave us a little present of candies popular in the region. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, just based on the quality of service Hazel provided. I highly recommend this homestay the pricing we had (less than $60/night) was very reasonably priced compared with other hotels in the area.
