Check-in was a nightmare, as the front desk could not program our key cards correctly. It took three tries - all the more frustrating because our room was a quarter mile away (this is a big lodge with numerous buildings). So we had to trek back and forth three times.
When we finally got into our room with the help of maintenance, someone else's luggage was in our room. Nobody could explain that.
Once we finally got settled, we enjoyed our stay. The lodge has three restaurants and several shops. You can walk to a few trails without taking the shuttle to Denali. But the shuttle is available out front. Rooms are pretty basic. The lodge is owned by Princess Cruise Lines so it's geared towards big groups. We arrived by train and tried to avoid the cruise people.
There is also a "village" across the highway that offers more shopping but not much in the way of dining. Basically, you have a cafe and a Subway. We ate at the lodge each day and were quite happy with the food options.
Despite the rough start, my wife and I agreed this was still an enjoyable stay and the best option in Denali for lodging. The lodge is closed during the winter months and had only been open for about a week when we arrived, which may account for the check-in debacle.
