It’s a great location, but perhaps the bay front has caused some deferred maintenance on exterior? Staff is great, and everyone is very friendly. Good restaurant in hotel, walkable location. Valet parking fee is required along with a resort fee that adds to overall cost significantly, would be nice to have an option to park yourself and come/go at your leisure. Our room was a corner with oceanview, and the reason we came back. Condition of room was good, but stain on carpet, counters, no artwork (letter left about ongoing project to update) but made the room very bare and white. We love Hilo and this location, but the hotel is in need of exterior maintenance, updating, and artwork in the rooms.

Positives, it’s on the water, beds were nice, room was clean, and close proximity to restaurants and coffee. Staff was pleasant and while they are under renovation it was not dirty at all. Negatives, check-in wasn’t ready until after 6pm, our original room was under maintenance and we didn’t know until we got there so it was downgraded (however, they waived our resort fees and valet parking), and they only have valet ($25 day).

The room had zero decor (literally zero, they even left a note on the desk to apologize for it) with a bunch of dirty scuff marks all over the place. Don’t be fooled with how modern the lobby/common areas look. Once you get to the room hallways it looks really old and crappy. Definitely one of the grittier hotels I’ve stayed in.

We stayed the weekend after Christmas with our family, and the hotel was running at maximum capacity. Our room, in the wing furthest back from the water had a mysterious *loud* banging noise in the bathroom wall (it sounded like pipes knocking together) and we notified the front desk immediately. They promptly sent up a maintenance person who confirmed the noise and could not tell us the source, nor could he fix it. We spent two sleepless nights in that room before someone at the desk was able to move us to a different room. The hotel took off the resort fee for the first night of our stay (which was something, but maybe not quite enough to make up for it). The hotel could really use a sprucing and the pool doesn't seem to be heated. We kind of liked the stay hotel cats that hung around.

My wife and I decided to stay at Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo after seeing so many positive recommendations on social media, and we were excited to try it out. The atmosphere is really nice, and it’s super close to the ocean, which makes for some beautiful views. The location is great and the hotel itself has a nice vibe. However, there were a couple of downsides. First, they only offer valet parking, which wasn’t super convenient for us. I’m not exactly looking for valet service, especially when we’re just renting a car, and I much prefer free parking on-site. Plus, the valet parking was pretty pricey. The bigger issue for us was that both my wife and I broke out in hives during our stay. The room felt very humid and damp, and we weren’t really comfortable with the high moisture in the air. Our allergies got much better the day we checked out, so while I’m not blaming the hotel entirely (there are many possible allergy triggers), I do think the humidity might’ve been a factor. Overall, it’s a beautiful place with a lot to offer, but the parking situation and humidity were not ideal for us.
