All reviews shown are from real guest experiences. Only travelers who have booked a stay with us can submit a review. We verify reviews according to our guidelines and publish all reviews, positive or negative.
Loved all the natural plants. We were in the end unit and the floor was very slanted. The place was very dilapidated. A building of some kind right next to our room had almost completely fallen down. Seemed very unsafe in our room. No hot water and just a dribble in the shower. Drawers taped shut, etc. Actually hole in the glass window. Many things wrong.
I normally don't leave reviews but wanted to point out a few things that way future travelers have more information. The hotel is located in downtown Hilo. From my understanding downtown Hilo has a policy of keeping it as a historic site so all the buildings are original. This hotel would also be the same. I also believe this hotel is over 100 years old. That means that there is no air conditioning, no tv. Your breakfast will consist of fruits, coffee, pastries, and span musubi. The time that we were there we had to use a communal shower if we wanted to take a warm shower as the regular water temperature in our room never got warm. In my opinion there are two types of travelers. On one side you have the ones that are here for the experience, others are here for the comfort. If you are a couple or travelling with family make sure you know in what camp you are in. I was fine with our situation but my husband not so much. That is why I am writing this review to inform people. If I read this type of review previous to us booking, unfortunately this would not be a hotel I would have selected again for the reasons above.

We had reserved their "Luxury Renovated King Room" nine months ago. We wanted the extra space. Upon checking in we found the room was a small room with a Kingsize bed, and no place to sit and hardly walk. I informed the front desk of the room description that we had reserved. I was told they did not have such a room. The whole eight days we were there, we saw no one of management. The ladies who worked the front desk and cleaned were wonderful! Emailing the hotel management after returning from our trip, they said they had taken possession in late 2024. They admitted they knew of the misrepresentation, and they apologized that I was caught in this process. Before I emailed the management, I looked on their website which still had the "Luxury Renovated King Room" listed. As of now their website has been corrected. No adjustment for the misrepresentation has been made.
We found the outside of the building is in extreme disrepair.
Allowed me to make reservation after last allowed checkin time. They did contact with alternative method, by which time, had also expired. No stay, no refund. Scam and shady buisness.

Stayed here 20 years ago after Leon Russell concert at Palace Theatre. Still Charming, old style Hawaii. Took awhile for hot water to heat, cool water was invigorating. Grateful for fan in room. It’d been better if ceiling fan’s bright light was on different switch.
The place is very old and in need of repair- which they appear to be working on. The room they gave us had no curtains and windows that would not close. They did move us to a room where these 2 things were taken care of but the rooms had no hot water. We were told we could shower in a lobby bathroom for hot water. They did provide a small breakfast in a comfortable area but would not stay here again.
Arrive at the property and from the outside it was a slum, a rat trap, totally unbelievably unkept, run down, unsightly, and filthy place! The room I was given was dirty and had stained sheets and filthy towels. I asked for my money back but was refused to be refunded the first day even after being shown two other unacceptable rooms. One room had a screen that was made 2-3 inches smaller than the window where lizards (on the island has Jackson’s camelians, geckos, mongoose, roaches etc.) and bugs, etc. could easily come in from a bamboo forest behind that room. Another room had mold and moss on the outside of the entire bathroom jealousies with a jealousy missing and openings in the screen/window. The ceiling fan light was burnt out and the room was obviously not cleaned because it had a paper bag with a used pizza box in it.
I was shocked that hotels.com had a rating of 10 of 10 for this property. I’ve used hotels.com for well over 10 years and has never experienced such “False Advertisement.” This property scammed me out of my money because of their contract. There should be some recourse to having money stolen from me and others because of the horrible condition of places like this one. This is criminal… liars and stealers. No one should be subjected to having to pay for the first day for an unacceptably filthy rat trap hotel room that was totally unacceptable three times over (looked @ 3 rooms) which I did not and never would have ever!!!
I stayed in a renovated room. the room itself was very nice and appointed well with a good mattress. there was a blanket but no sheet, just a bed sheet and blanket. no A/C - but didn't matter with a fan and windows open at night in hilo - very comfortable (and i sleep hot). the bathroom has a screen opening you can't shut - you will hear birds and frogs! the grounds and façade of the hotel are terrible so just be ready when you pull in because it looks dumpy. the staff was friendly. A big pro was I was a 5-10 min walk from Friday night market and restaurants so it was nice to not have to drive to get food and drinks. overall I recommend but know that it is old school property with few amenities but a good room for the price.
Overall it was a good experience for the price. No frills accomodations that are adequate for a good night's sleep. The property has good potential and it appears they are working on improving the overall facility with some remodeling. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. It felt safe and was overall a good resting place for the night.
If I could are the hotel 0 stars, I would. The check in staff were very friendly. But….the shower faucet was a vise grip. The tile looked gross. No blanket, only 1 sheet. The windows did not close, so we heard the traffic from the highway on the backside of the hotel all night. The walls are paper thin, so we heard a screaming kid for hours. We would never stay here again.

Difficult after-hour check-in.
Open door was hiding the key lock box, no instructions on how to use the room door security plus it hadn’t been set up properly according to a staff member who was staying late for another project and happily helped me out.
