Great ryokan, totally worth the trip to the area, lots to do between hiking out to the suspension bridge to soaking in seven different private onsens. The service was amazing and all meals were delicious, a must stay.

Extraordinary!!! This hidden gem in IzuKogen is a wonderful escape from the hustle of Tokyo welcoming you to the traditional Japanese onsen, hot spring bath. While we had been to the main building for lunch or to peruse their lovely gift shop it was our first time staying. It surpassed our expectations in terms of service, meals and the incredible private hot springs. Their baths are also available for use between 11am and 2pm for a fee and there is also a restaurant with a beautiful kaiseki lunch.

Amazing Ryokan Stay!
Such an incredible stay! The private onsen were fantastic and there is a stunning trail on the waterfront that is only a 15 minute walk away. The food was delicious and the staff was so friendly.

A great way to relax
It was a great opportunity to wind down from the business of the major cities. The hotel is a tad in the middle of nowhere and transportation to and from to get to other cities is lengthy (2-3 hours) and expensive ($400 usd). The staff was very friendly, spoke english very well. The breakfast and dinner were a fantastic ode to traditional Japanese food. If you are in Japan for longer than 2 weeks, I would recommend staying here to enjoy the quiet and natural surroundings

BEST STAY EVER. Hands down the best onsen ever. The service is beyond excellent. The location is a bit of a walk from the station, approx 10 mins (with all your luggage) There are scenic routes to the observation deck and bridge.

Thank You!
Extremely relaxing trip away from Tokyo and Kyoto. We took the train in and found it fairly easy to walk to (we had backpacks, not rollers). Service was great. Baths were hot. Food was amazing.

A Breath of Fresh Air
The most perfect place to stop for a night or 2 between the hustle & bustle of Tokyo and the tourist-heavy streets of Kyoto. We booked 1 night for 4 adults, so shared a large suite. There were 2 separate tatami rooms for sleeping and a shared Western-style living room, kitchen, toilet room, and wet room for shower/bath. We also booked the kaiseki dinner and breakfast meals. The taste and presentation of both meals were breathtaking. During our down time, we strolled through the property's forest and nature walks in our yukatas and soaked in their private onsen rooms. Service was impeccable and pricing was very reasonable for the tier of stay. Will definitely return.

Best onsen experience .... my second stay and it just becomes more enchanting. I will be back next year and for many years to come. All inclusive stay with private hot spring rooms that are inside and outside. Delicious gourmet meals that allow you to taste the real Japan. Countryside and ocean paths that show you the perpetual beauty of this fascinating country. Staff speaks some English and is very accommodating.

I wanted to do the onsen experience but quite a few people in my group have tattoos. This resort allows for private onsens with locking doors so it’s not a problem. I also got sick during my stay and had to visit the hospital. The staff gave us a map to the hospital and called ahead to explain my symptoms. The onsens were extremely clean! I witnessed staff do a full clean daily. The property was beautiful and the staff was very kind. The only thing I would like to see changed is offering a secondary menu. When you’re sick, the last thing you want to eat is cold, raw fish. I had to eat elsewhere during my stay.

In dire need of repair
We went here for three things: escape, luxury and relaxation. Escape: 2.5/5 While somewhat secluded in a wooded area, this ryokan is in the middle of a small town. We had to cross a road that runs between the main hotel grounds and our room. While it's a small-occupancy place, you're packed tightly together. The baths are underneath the rooms, so you can hear people while they're in there. Luxury: 3/5 The grounds are beautiful, especially at night. The food is well-presented and seems luxurious, but as traditional Japanese food it might leave Western palettes desiring more. The service was fine. The staff was very nice, but weren't really striving to be top notch service. It reminded me more of a Best Western hotel. The biggest problem is the condition of some of the baths. Two are disgusting and worn down, with the pavement turned black and bath tiles totally missing. I can't believe these are even open; I saw better conditions at a public bath house that cost 500 yen. Others are also worn down, with wood chipped and peeling away and other problems. Relaxation: 4/5 Ignoring the condition of the baths themselves, they are extremely relaxing. In a normal onsen you have a cold bath nearby, which is my favorite part. No such cold bath here, but we got by. The noise from other rooms, and the proximity of other buildings/cars, makes it difficult to fully escape. But it wasn't so bad. A big awesome surprise was the walk to the cliffs and waterfall! You must do this.

Like unearthing a clean, quiet part of your soul
You know how some meditation sessions ask you to picture a place you love? That's Hanafubuki. When you first get there and you're properly checked in, the temptation is to settle into the tatami mats and the exquisite green tea and just let the complimentary sugar candy melt slowly on your tongue. That's great, but before that, be sure to gallivant down the river to the sea. There's a surreal, black rock coastline that looks like something between the setting of drama and the stage for a dramatic villain speech. Even on a moodily overcast day, the shallows are a curious gleam of turquoise-emerald. Go back and snag one of the private onsens with an outdoor view, and bask in the mineral warmth and the ponderous drone of a cicada. I swear to you that the onsens are magical--the blisters on my feet just melted off, and the ache in my shoulders disappeared like it was suctioned out. Change into a yukata, and stroll languidly to a full kaiseki dinner. Roll into your futon sated and happy, and close your eyes to commit the experience to memory.

Food was not fresh and seemed prepared somewhere else, then reheated. I wonder if there was a professional chef at the site. I totally cannot understand why the rating was so high for this ryokan. Noticed other customers at restaurants looked very unimpressed as well.

Wonderful ryokan Hanafubuki!
Simply amazing! Service from staff felt very genuine, rooms were really nice, grounds were lovely, onsens all private and really nicely done. The food was incredible! This felt like genuinely high end food rather than less good food dressed up as something its not. The evening meal was course after course for around 2 hours, loads of room between tables so it felt very private, wonderful setting in the restaurant. Breakfast also very extravagant, in a different dining room with more lovely garden views. Izu Kogen felt very peaceful and the coast is only a short stroll away, with a fantastic coast path and suspension bridge. It felt like it had everything somewhere like Hakone has but without any of the tourist nonsense. It might sound like a lot of money but you really do get what you pay for here. I can imagine there are many ryokans at a similar price point offering much less. This was easily the highlight of my trip and an experience that will stay with me forever.

Well worth it!
The hosts are very welcoming. Hospitality is amazing. You'll feel right at home and more. We arrived here on our first day in Japan and after hours of sitting on a plane and trains, it was well worth the trip down here. It rained when we arrived and the staff immediately took our luggage, wiped us down and served us tea while they set up our room. The room was very warm and cozy. Awesome view of a garden. You'll appreciate all the little things while you're here. The private onsens are to die for! There are many to choose from. It rained but that helped us relax more. It was beautiful. Must do! The kaiseki dinner was an amazing experience in itself. Every dish was prepared with extra care. I guarantee you'll be satisfied at the end. Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone visiting Japan. It was a great way to begin our 2 week stay. I wish I I could've stayed a little longer. I will miss this place dearly!

Beautiful hotel, incredible experience!
I spent a night at Hanafubuki and it was one of the most wonderful and unique experiences I've had in any country. It's located on the east coast of Izu, a peninsula southwest of Tokyo with a peaceful, tropical atmosphere. The inn is about 10 minutes on foot from the Izu Kogen station. From the moment I entered the inn's grounds, I felt totally transported - even though it covers a relatively small area, they did a wonderful job making it feel like it's truly a part of the area's natural environment. The service was impeccable, from the welcome cup of tea I received to the absolutely spectacular dinner - one of the best meals I've had anywhere in Japan. The grounds are gorgeous, including a small forest walk where you can smell the sea and get a view of the local mountain, and there's nothing like exploring in a yukata to make you feel like you've completely left the outside world. There's a variety of spectacular indoor and outdoor onsen, all of which are very thoughtfully equipped with an extra cold water pipe (very necessary in the summer!). My Japanese-style room was also extraordinarily comfortable, with a small balcony looking out onto the forest. All I can say is, if you have a chance to stay at Hanafubuki during your time in Japan, I can't recommend it enough, even if it's just for one night. It's truly one of the most special experiences you can have in the country, and I can't wait to come back.
