Upon entering my room, I was immediately overwhelmed by a strong mildew or mold smell. Concerned, I picked up the phone and called reception. The front desk agent came to inspect the room and claimed the smell was bleach from cleaning, not mildew. I asked if the room could be aired out, but he said no. I then requested a different room, but he told me the hotel was fully booked and he couldn’t move me.
I asked for a refund, but he refused, stating that housekeeping had left for the day and, because I had used the washroom, the room could no longer be resold. This made little sense to me, as the room was not in a livable condition to begin with.
I then asked to speak to a manager. He told me no, but said I could try calling the number listed on the card in the lobby. That number connected to a fax machine. I asked him to call the manager on my behalf, and he said he already had. When I asked what number he used, he pointed to the same one I had tried. I pressed further and he admitted it was actually a text message he had sent. He showed me the exchange: he had texted something like, “It’s happening again in room 138, I told them it was bleach.” The manager replied, “We don’t use bleach.”
I’ve since opened a case with Expedia and Wyndham, but neither has been able to reach the manager to assist with a refund. I chose not to stay the night and returned my keys.
