I stayed here a few days with my husband and dog during the Christmas holiday and it was lovely. Overall the stay was a 4.25/5. The staff is a 10/10 in kindness and helpfulness. The lobby and restaurants (Jack’s and the pub) have good food options and are very convenient. The hotel building itself is a bit old so some hallways smell a bit of stinky socks. We got a room with a balcony which was lovely. When we stayed it was raining so some trails of ants appeared in our room which wasn’t ideal but not the end of the world. The staff mentioned that they’re a green hotel so they don’t use pesticides which I appreciate them for. Overall the location is absolutely wonderful - everything you need (pharmacy, coffee shop, groceries, ATM, pubs and restaurants) are within a short walking distance. The local fisherman’s wharf is right next door, and you can walk along the trail to Cannery Row/Monterey Bay Aquarium too.

This property is so very nice & centrally located with a staff of very nice patient employees and my BD consists of a beautiful spacious room with a view. Lots to do incl bars, dining, ice skating, bike rentals, walkable to the CHARTHOUSE RESTAURANT!

Rooms above bars don't mix...
We checked in on a Friday night, and the hotel was extremely busy. The room we got was right above a bar and right by the elevators... was not a great night for sleep. Our room was not very well cleaned, stains and stickiness on the counters and toe clippings on the floor... I really expected more from a high-end hotel like the Portola. we asked to change rooms, but were told the hotel was sold out. Didn't get any better with a storm that came in and knocked out the power, internet and TV for most of the hotel. Tried to change rooms on Saturday, but the front desk systems were down due to the storm. Pretty much were stuck with the room till we checked out... the storm was not their fault, but a dirty room above a bar with karaoke, and drunk people crawling down the hallways at night was not cool! This hotel is in a great location in Monterey and I had high hopes for our stay, but future stays in Monterey will be at other establishments unfortunately.
