The rooms are small, think 1960’s era. However, I and my brother who are not small had no issues. The view is indescribably wonderful. Also, this is a motel and therefore there are no elevators. If you have issues, request a lower level room. If we come back, we would happily stay here again.

I was disappointed that our “apartment” was not in the area of the Motel. I wondered when I booked as to where it was! We had to drive if we wanted to go to the Museum, restaurant and gift shop. We always wanted to stay at Gouldings for the view and history. Very disappointed in the “apartment”, VERY shabby furniture and plain (except a lovely Navajo rug and a couple of paintings.) Our ice machine wasn’t working and we had to drive to the Motel to get some. A mirror other than the one in the bathroom would be nice too, The scenery, monuments close by were beautiful, but we were next to a busy road of people driving back and forth to the campground- annoying!

The historic hotel provides all conveniences needed for travelers: dining room with high quality meals at reasonable priced, the individual rooms, actually individual buildings are spacious (consist of two separate rooms), gas station is within the hotel complex. Most of all, this is a hotel that John Wayne and John Ford’s movie production staff stayed. And you may feel part of history by staying at this place.

The Navajo Nation bought all the property and has been running it. I have no issue with that at all, what I do have issue with, is the terrible service in the restaurant, the horrid sewer smell within their women’s restroom and the fact that our room was entered TWICE without our consent. The first time while we were still there getting ready for the day and then again while we were away. This was AFTER we had requested no housekeeping when I was asked by the front desk when checking in. They didn’t try to hide it as they made the beds; I have pain meds I carry for arthritis and typically ask that housekeeping refrain unless requested. Also for being a dry reservation, the area is littered with beer bottles and cans. It’s also sad to see the stray dogs on the property…next time I’ll just stay in Moab.

There’s basically only two places to stay in Monument Valley and Gouldings is one of them. Despite that it doesn’t rest on its laurels and we loved the self catering villa we stayed in for three nights. Clean and extremely comfortable it was a privilege to sit on the porch and watch the sun cast ever-changing shadows on the stunning rock towers of the valley. This was where John Wayne stayed when he made his famous Westerns here and the small museum and even the cabin that appeared in some of the movies is a must for lovers of Hollywood. A very special place to experience Monument Valley.

The scenery is beautiful but the bed was not very comfortable and the sheets were very rough and hard. Food in the restaurant was good and there was a lot of it. It would have gotten more stars but for the price of it all.
