This was the 6th time we have stayed at The Freehand. It is a bit run down but the price point used to be good and it's always been clean. This time it was pricier and we got to enjoy a lower floor room where they have a club night on Saturdays that goes until 3am. Our room was SHAKING from the base, I phoned reception and they offered earplugs. So you're going to piss off multiple floors of guests for the sake of your club night? (Read the trip advisor reviews, there are many that complain about this) If you get the lower rooms, you get so much noise you can't sleep. One night a guy in the neighbourhood screamed for 3 hours straight, every night there was so much street noise that sleep was patchy. If you can secure a room higher up and get a decent price, it's worth a stay but who can guarantee they're not going to get a low floor room? Simply not worth it. Last time for us after many good years

Shared a bunk room with 3 friends and while it was cozy, we really enjoyed the stay at Freehand! The housekeeping staff and folks helping with the baggages were super sweet - front desk staff are a little cold (not sure why- guess you can get a taste of both sides of New Yorkers!)

Went at a busier time of year, so prices were definitely higher than usual. It is fine but nothing special, very tight spaces, no bathroom trash can or surface area. The WiFi was not usable. Service was fine but nothing stellar. Expectations would have been lower had the price been a bit more fair :/ but I guess that’s demand

The best bang for your buck in NYC. The rooms feel big compared to what most rooms in the area offer. If you want something nicer or more luxurious, you're looking at a much higher step up in price. This is the best. Location is great and close to a lot of trains. Easy peasy.

Cannot Recommend
I was very disappointed with my stay at The Freehand, as I used to live in New York and years ago enjoyed the rooftop. The front desk was rude and a bit snooty, which for the rate of this hotel feels very unnecessary for the attitude and not caring about a guest's stay. I asked for a kettle when I checked in and they said one would be sent up within 10-15 minutes, but I never got one the entire time. The rooms are extremely small, even by New York's standards. I got a King room, which I don't believe was actually a King. They put me in a room with one small window that looked into a creepy small area between two buildings so I had no natural light. There were virtually no amenities in the room either, besides shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The walls are very thin, so you hear everything especially if close to an elevator, making it hard to sleep or sleep in. I think there are better options within the price range than the Freehand.
