The property is nice and convenient and a reasonable size for midtown NYC. The staff were nice - in particular Freddie the doorman is an excellent ambassador for the hotel. I was a little taken aback by the 'resort fee' - which they argue is for water (we received one small bottle each on day one for a three day stay) and the gym. We were thrown out of the gym, claiming the children (8 and 10 years old) were too young to be there. This is despite the fact it was -10 Celsius outside and we needed the children to get some energy out (they were with a responsible adult). I commonly use gyms with the children all around the world, so this was surprising. I am used to paying a resort fee when there are amenities (like a pool), but this was a bit much. They should just charge more for the room.

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in January 2025 and was glad I chose it. The front desk at check-in was congenial and efficient and answered the few questions I had and allowed me to check-in early. My room was well arranged, very clean and up to date. I really appreciated that the windows had two blinds: one for total blackout darkness and another more sheer to allow light in but still provide privacy. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was very clean, too, and had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Wi-Fi was quick and stable. The only negative was sound penetration of the room. The door allowed more noise than I expected to come in whenever anyone left or returned to the room next door. Happily they weren't coming at odd hours so there was no real impact on the quality of my stay. Similarly with the sound of water from, I assume, the shower running in the room above or adjacent to my own. It was surprisingly obvious but, again, not at times that impacted my sleep, etc. Another complaint not about the room but about hotel policy is the ridiculous "resort" fee. The Westgate is a fine hotel and I enjoyed my stay immensely but a $40US non-optional fee is ridiculous, especially since it only covers bottled water, wi-fi and the fitness centre. In 2025 wi-fi isn't a luxury at a hotel, it's as basic a feature as a bed and shower. The Westgate is a fine hotel and shouldn't have to resort to sham resort fees. Still, I had a great stay and would stay again.

Would’ve given it 4 stars if the room wasn’t so hot. Set the temperature to 50 degrees and still it was hot. Had to open the window just to cool the room. Told the front desk and they said they would have an engineer look at it but nothing changed.

Arrived before check in time so was told to come back at 3:00. They did store our luggage while we went sightseeing. Arrived back at 4:30 and our room was still not ready. Not sure how this was possible as check out time was 11:00 and we had already shown up once trying to check in. We were tired from walking around and it was cold out (30s) so we didn't want to leave again. We were finally able to check in around 4:45. They did waive the resort fee for the inconvenience. We stayed four nights and spent all of our time in the Manhattan (?) area. Walked everywhere we went. The hotel is nice and I thought it was in a good location. We took the train from LaGuardia to Grand Central Station and it was a short walk from the station to the hotel. Would stay again.

If possible, please treat yourself to a room with a balcony. I used it every morning, afternoon, and night, despite the cold weather, and I enjoyed every last second of it.
