The Lodge at Bear Mountain
We loved the ambience and rustic cabin decor. There were no ADA accommodations in this room. Because of our age and illness we’d ask for an ADA room next time. Beautiful drives north and south. We went to the FDR home and Vanderbilt mansion, a little shopping in the area and a t’shirt or two from the Lodge shop, of course. Great diners in the area, too.

The lodge was far away from the Inn, which is not convenient for a hiker. The tv did not work and the building was tired.

Come for the setting not the room
As you would expect given the nature of Overlook Lodge, the room was not up to modern standards. It was tiny and did not have a desk. The bathroom was very small with no place for toiletries. The walls were thin and you could hear people come and go outside. But the scenery and setting are gorgeous. So if you are willing to put up with the inconvenience and not have to spend any extra time in the room it is worth it. The 1915 Restaurant in the main hotel, a very pleasant half mile walk from the Overlook Lodge, was excellent.

Didn’t like not having food onsite. Coffee maker didn’t work. Room was humid and somewhat smelled. Not enough towels. At the Inn the brunch was WAY too costly. That is crazy. For that amount you should have been given alcoholic drinks, Bloody Mary’s, mimosa’s etc.

The room was great. Bathroom could use a fan and safer shower, ie grab bar and grippy floor. Room was comfy and clean with a mini fridge and Keurig coffee machine. A safe in the closet would also be helpful.

Rooms are tiny. Internet never did connect. Bed was made everyday but nobody checked if we needed coffee pods. Also, pretty sure there was a ghost in our room.

Needs renovations
Surroundings are beautiful, cottages in desperate need of renovation. Trash around the property. No hot water. Room was tiny, not even a chair in the room. Bathroom was minuscule. Old, tired property

The Bear Mountain Inn, the Cottages and the Overlook Lodge are all beautiful. However, Bear Mountain State Park right next to Hessian Lake is absolutely filthy. People barbecue and picnic and they leave a terrible mess. Another issue when we were there was a very loud wedding party in our building. The party did not run late by adult standards for a weekend night, but we have young children and early bedtimes, so we think we should have been informed about the party in advance . That way, we could have chosen a different building, if available, or a different weekend. In our view, the main draw to this area is the natural beauty. We enjoyed hiking in the forest, and the views of the mountains and the Hudson River very much.
