The room smelled of mildew and everything was old. There were a couple hairs on the floor and one in the bed. The bathroom had mold in it. The hotel itself is old with an oddly large parking/driving area out front that was often filled with buses and taxis which made entering very uncomfortable. When we returned to the hotel 30 minutes after checking out to ask for a taxi they acted like they had never seen us before and asked if we had stayed at the hotel before being willing to call us a taxi.
The town itself is amazing, especially Jugokudani, the hiking trails, and the bear park.
This was a wonderful visit and stay for my family! The onsen was fantastic and my kids really enjoyed the onsen water slide! I had never seen such a thing before! The dinner was incredible and included all you can eat crab legs. Breakfast was also delicious. Walking distance to hell valley. My only, and very minor, complaint is that the dinner buffet charged for soft drinks, which seemed a little kechi.
Very large hotel catering to big tour groups. Noisy and rowdy.. Only exception is its near to the train station. We opted for buffet breakfast and dinner but were given 2 hour timeslot each time - either very early or very late timing. No flexibility at all. Asked for extra pillow, just a flat 'no pillow' answer. Room is quite big but looks rundown. Will not stay there again.
Lovely hotel in a convenient spot. We booked an onsen room and it was worth every penny. Kids loved having their own bath on the balcony. Public baths also exceptional.
This is my second time staying at Hotel Mahoroba - and it delivered on almost everything as expected.
The hotel rooms were clean, the staff was polite and the baths were enjoyable.
One thing to note - there are 2 different meal options - there are buffets at Liberty Room and Green Terrace. I've tried both, both are good. But I can't seem to fully understand the differences and the website doesn't provide enough clarity.
We had a Japanese style room. It was quite large, but not entirely clean. In general, the hotel is quite dated. For example, the keys are still of the mechanical type.
The staff was very nice and helpful.
The onsen was large and fun.
My family of 3 stayed for 2 nights. The room was of very good size and the pillow and mattress was very comfortable. Although the hotel is of older design, overall it is maintained well. As it is half board, breakfast and dinner buffet was served. Average of 3/5 for our liking. There is quite a big aracade/amusement center at the basement. My son enjoyed himself very much too. Onsen available on site makes it convenient too. Short drive to the hell valley, less than 3mins. We walked there as parking charges was ¥500. There is a walking street across the hotel. There is a nice pizza shop there too.
Excellent buffet dinner. Hotel a bit dated but clean and shower seems to have been replaced not long ago so works fine. Can't control room temperature.
A massive aged hotel with a huge onsen and a gigantic restaurant. The dinner is worth the money, with extensive sashimi, steak and crab options. The hotel is, however, aged and you need to be prepared for it :)
The hotel is nice and spacious. Great onsen and the food provided for half board is very decent. However, the bed was not comfortable. We slept poorly the 2 nights we were there. This is the only hotel we ever encountered who charges for ice.
