Good value historic hotel.

First impressions weren’t great. We were carrying our luggage up to the doors and a member of staff came ahead of us and promptly let the big outside door swing shut in our faces as we approached! Reception was empty and after 30 seconds the manager appeared and finished a phone call quickly to deal with us. The room was on the second floor and there was no lift. We were in the attic with an obstructed view of the car park & the racecourse behind. We noticed the towels on the radiator looked very messy, almost as if they were used so I went back down to the manager who brought us up fresh ones a short while later. That said it had everything we needed with a good selection of tea, coffee, water, tissues etc and for £55 it was very good value. The shower over the bath worked well and the towels were a good size. We’d happily stay again although not in that room due to the obstructed view.

Poor

Reception poor, no customer service skills, hospitality skills or much else. Asked us to pay, when I had payed already using the portal the hotel had sent me…had to chase confirmation.Simple request for something to put flowers in for a funeral next day met with blunt “no”. Rescued by helpful female manager. Got to room- not the luxury suite I had booked and paid for back and forth ensues that “it is a luxury suite”. Quickly followed by “I’ll get my colleague to talk to you” (friendly female again).Nope it’s an en-suite room , checked pictures online and it is in fact half a junior suite. “Impossible to move us”. I booked the luxury suite for numerous reasons - one being the extra bed (snorer), the four poster and freestanding tub in the pictures looked like just the treat we needed in a difficult week. So …they “open up” the other room to our “suite”…a dining room for 8??!!! At least it had a garden view instead of the back yard that the bedroom looked on to I guess. Too shattered to pursue things further , running a bath proved impossible as the tap didn’t run, only the shower head. Walls were marked and the floor became dangerously slippy at the slightest splash of water. So much else fell short of what we see in other 4 star hotels, the only positive was the bed was clean and comfortable. On checking out there was , again, no interest in our stay. Get some more staff who have hospitality and customer service skills !! (From two people who work and have worked in both)

Unfortunately very dirty

Room wasn’t clean the bed sheets had stains on it and same with the bath robe which was not washed properly. Very poor quality breakfast for the price of £16.00. Toast fried in oil, low quality ingredients. .

As the Georgian Home of Lord Byron and our choice for our wedding 2 years ago we have come to regard this hotel and the owners as our second home. My wife was delighted, when without being asked we were placed in the bridal suite, complete with standalong bath and a four poster bed. This was where she spent the night before the wedding and so tripped some happy memories. We wanted to stay longer but they were full. Breakfast was promptly served and suitably cooked. Free car park now for guests.

Historic building that has been turned into a hotel. It is a beautiful location and building but not close to anything. Our room was very dark but that is the nature of this old building, so it is understandable.
