I paid for, but didn't stay at this property. I booked a room on Wotif, while on a work trip, happy to stay at a discount property as I actually like the "tradies and labourers" ambience of old hotels with shared bathrooms and friendly public bars. However, when I got to the hotel, the room I booked (private shower, shared toilet) wasn't available. So, they swapped me to a fully shared bathroom room. Opened the room's door, and there was somebody there already in bed. Not sure where the problem was, Wotif or the Royal, but they actually didn't have any room to book, but both Wotif and the Hotel thought that they did have. They gave me a cash refund and I found a room elsewhere.

My low rating is with regard to renovations being undertaken, presumably to improve general presentation & the accommodation suits. Nonetheless, in the interim it is noisy and dusty.

I've been staying at the Royal for 3 years when visiting family. It's budget accommodation. They're currently renovating so the reduced prices reflect that. . The sheets are clean. Plenty of towels and the staff are great. Kitchenette isn't usable at present, but kettle & fridge in room. Restaurant downstairs. Light was broken in ladies shared toilet. That's an issue if you're booking a room with shared bathroom. Wifi is erratic on 2nd floor. I stayed in room 26 this time & it gets smoke from the kitchen. Rooms are on 1st & 2nd floor of hotel, so take that into account if stairs are an issue for you.
