Nice and interesting hotel at a competitive cost - friendly staff - room was clean and smart but a bit warm and fan/air con didn’t work - breakfast display was good but not special (didn’t have any cooked options though so can’t comment on those) - I would go back but as I say, it didn’t feel as special as it could have done
Characterful Hotel in Perfect Sightseeing location
I stayed in room 116 and it was perfect for me. Very quiet, but spacious, in the "main body" of the hotel, close enough to reception and the restaurant. Some of the rooms are in offshoot extensions to the main building and just lack the same character.
The downfall I would say to this hotel was the customer service and service at the bar. On both Friday and Saturday night it wasn't particularly busy, but generally there were only 1 or 2 people working on the bar at it's busiest time. The bar staff were very pleasant, but we were given a voucher for 3 cocktails (I verified this) on behalf of reception but the bar staff only allowed cheaper drinks, odd! They called reception but it was a change of staff since they provided the voucher. The voucher was given by the hotel as a friend had called up to get us drinks.
100% perfect location to explore the hotel.
The hotel was very comfortable and the staff without exception were very polite, welcoming, and extremely helpful.
Our only disappointment was that the shower was very difficult to control. It was not possible to adequately blend hot and cold water, so that it was either scalding hot or icy cold. Surely there should be a mixer tap.
The Malmaison oxford is so far one of our best stays we have had in the uk! The hotel is a stunning renovation from a prison to a hotel that my now fiance just loved. The interior is stunning and classy with such helpful staff that took our car and parked it when we arrived, making us feel like Royalty.
The Junior suite was breath taking with so much space, large bed, large tv, comfy and stylish seating and a large double shower to top it off.
although we didn't eat in the hotel we did visit the bar and had a delicious salted caramel cocktail which was beyond amazing and deserves recognition.
only tiniest downside is the entrance to the hotel that looked a lot like a pathway rather then a drive way to a hotel. which caused us to drive down a bus only lane on the first approach.
other then that we had a fantastic time and wished we stayed longer to fully experience the hotel and everything oxford had to offer. we will be back next time!
The hotel lacked the luxury I was expecting. It looks impressive as you drive up but behind the doors, the furniture is worn, chipped and our suite even had cigarette burns and stains in the leather. I queried if we were actually in the suite, and we were told we were but no questions or concerns were asked. The reception doesn't provide seating so you are left standing as you check in with all your bags which was a bad start to what I thought was a luxury hotel. The bar was equally as tired and inevitably the lack of standard made us cancel breakfast at the hotel. We also cancelled our Malmaison trip booked for birmingham later in the year. It was expensive and although I understand it is perfectly located for walking around Oxford, so was the premier inn. I booked this hotel for a luxurious, quirky stay in Oxford but was let down. The theme was lost, the standard was low.
Quirky. Fun. We had a standard cell room in the converted old prison. Comfortable and had everything we needed. Only negatives were that parking is very limited at the hotel ( the Westgate 24 hour car park is only a 5-10 minute walk away though), the paintwork was grubby in certain areas and that it took a long time to get the temperature of the shower right. Perfect central location for going to the theatre, visiting the university colleges, the shops and the many restaurants and bars. We enjoyed our stay.
This was booked by a colleague. It was an interesting experience but not sure how I felt about sleeping in a room previously occupied by convicted criminals…
Some would find it fascinating but others might be quite disturbed by the thought
Myself and my partner booked into the hotel on Sunday afternoon 16th March anx we were greeted at the entrance by a lovely helpful and polite girl who advised they would sort the car out and park it and then told us where we needed to go.we were then greeted at the reception by an amazing man unfortunately i didnt get his name he was so friendly polite and couldn't do enough i advised it was my partners birthday as he asked if we were staying for anything special he then upgraded the room and gave us a voucher for a free cocktail and took our bag to the room as went for a drink First Exceptional service above and beyond thankyou so much.
Rooms were nice and updated recently. Good location. We liked the history of the building, being a converted prison, it made it interesting. We'd recommend it.
Quirky and super cool. Astounding use of space maintaining so many features. All staff were friendly, polite and went overboard to ensure you felt welcomed and uad everything you needed.
