Family rooms - i.e. the rooms with 1 queen and 2 twins or 1 king and 2 twins are located in the basement. The basement really is the basement. Windows only opened up to the sidewalk. Basement rooms had a musty and humid odor - unpleasant. Additionally, Room 101, the windows opened toward the street that was perhaps 10 feet away at ground level. Window frame around the windows were warped and looks water damaged, leaving separation cracks in the window frame that allowed daylight in and extremely loud traffic noise. People that were talking on the sidewalk sounded like they were in the room with you. The home is very uniquely decorated and the inn keeper was very friendly and inviting. However, at least for the basement rooms (which is both of the family rooms), the property definitely was showing it's age. The bathroom was extremely cramped, with brown tiles from the 70's everywhere and the shower head had a lot of brown hard water stains. It's possible the ground floor and above rooms were nicer, but the basement rooms, I would not recommend.

Great service and good breakfast. Lessons learned call hotel property before reserving lodging on Expedia since I had reserved 2 bedroom and spoke with Expedia worker yet only 1 bed was reserved even though I paid for 2. Yikes!!

Perfect in Pacific Grove

Fabulous stay with two little kids in the newly renovated. We are on the top floor, and one of the bedrooms was in the turret, which was an exciting surprise!

Wonderful Stay – Highly Recommended! My wife and I loved this beautifully designed hotel. We only stayed for one night, but it was truly a great experience thanks to the warm and welcoming hospitality of the wonderful staff—especially Ayan (apologies if the spelling is incorrect) and his wife. The room was clean and very comfortable. Parking was easy and readily available. Breakfast was elegant and perfect—just the right start to our day. The hotel's location is ideal—close to everything you might need and only a 10-minute walk to the beach. We highly recommend this place and will definitely book the same hotel for our next trip to Monterey. Thank you! Saad & Maha

The Charles Pacific Grove is a very quaint boutique hotel with a comforting Victorian charm. It is clean, quiet, and a relaxing respite from a day of activities, and a warm hug from the Monterey Bay fog. The staff go out of their way to welcome you. It is a joy to be there.

The staff at the Charles was extremely friendly. We felt right at home and all of our needs were met. We loved the look and feel to the inn. It's very walkable to Lighthouse ave and to the beach as well.

Beautiful lodgings, great atmosphere, delicious elevated continental breakfast, delightful wine and cheese served in the afternoon; which is an excellent way to meet the fellow guests. Ian and Kiersten are the perfect hosts, full of town knowledge and recommendations. The Charles is close to the Presidio, Cannery Row, Fisherman's wharf, beaches, great restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Our son is stationed at the Presidio, so we will definitely be back and will stay at The Charles!
