I reviewed some of the reviews prior to traveling. Do not take the negative reviews with much weight. I wholeheartedly would give this resort a 5/5. The place was beautiful (yes, a little dated, but beautiful). The staff were so welcoming, funny, kind, consistent, and absolute professionals. The resort's pools were absolutely overwhelming. They were the biggest pools that I have ever seen in my life. The animals and nature were also amazing. I have never seen some of the animals. There were coatis everywhere! They were so cute. The location was convenient to Downtown Playa Del Carmen. There was a resort shuttle for 10 dollars round trip per person; the shuttle was great! A note of caution! Book a taxi from the airport PRIOR to getting to Mexico. The taxi experience is frustrating when you do it the day of. Never, ever, pay the first price they tell you. We paid 220 for two people to get to and from the resort. You can likely find cheaper. All of the critics seem to be not down to earth. This is an affordable and welcoming resort. You get what you pay for with respect to fancy food. The food was what you would expect for an affordable resort. It was good, but nothing I would rave about. There is only one criticism that I do agree with. I think the reservations for the restaurants fill up wayyyy too quickly. Make sure to book a reservation as soon as you check in. Plan your dinner times out to be conveinant for your plans. Otherwise you will not get a reservation. <3

Overall we were very very happy with our stay. Food at these types of resorts is always hit and miss. I'd give a 4 stars on food, but the rest was 5 stars. We are also used to having waiters at the pool that would take orders and bring drinks and that only happened one time over 7 days.

When we arrived to our room, it was nothing like the photos advertised. It was very, very dirty. My husband was using the bathroom and began coughing profusely, immediately needing his inhaler, it was then after looking around that the area by the toilet had mold growing, along the wall, and vents. Additionally the pillow cases and sheets were dirty. We requested a new room due to my husband’s asthma acting up. The quality of food was just very, very average. Also, there was a very bad smell in two of the buffets, almost like sewer water. Also crazy that we had to make reservations for the “nicer” restaurants, when the food served was the same as in the buffets. The only upside was the very friendly staff. After we complained about the room, they sent the concierge to us within 10 minutes and took us to a new room.

Multiple staff members with concierge and room service were either unhelpful or outright did not seem to care very much if they could help you. Restaurant and beach staff were overall very kind and welcoming.

The staff, grounds and amenities were first-class! The food was good and the service was excellent. The Laguna Villa Suites were beautiful and well-appointed, but the many of the details were overlooked. Upon checkin, my welcome gift had not been left in my room, so I had to ask for my bottle of champagne and fruit platter to be delivered. There were also no bath salts, bath bomb amenities in my room, as were shown on all of the video tours that I had watched prior to my visit.

I love the property, when I did not love was checking in and being told that we’re all inclusive, but not the top-tier all inclusive. There are levels to their all inclusive what you got on Expedia was not what you got there. You had to pay an extra $200 to be all inclusive and to be allowed in certain areas.

The property needs to be updated. They need to find a way to keep the musky smell out of the rooms and the sewer smells. The beds are super comfortable. All the staff are friendly. The à la cart restaurants could do better. We found the food to be over cooked and tasteless. We enjoyed the buffet they always had such a variety of food. We highly recommend the Chill out restaurant by the beach even though you have to pay for the meals and drinks. The food is amazing.

In general we had a great time. For a five star resort it could take a lot more maintenance in the rooms. We stayed in the building 7000 and our room had a lot of issues such as the thermostat not working properly, filtering water between shower and toilet area. Overall a good experience but a lot of flaws. Staff is friendly for the most part but they could try harder. Very big property. If you don’t enjoy long walks this is not the right hotel for you. Shuttle service runs constantly but space is limited.
