Room was not very clean - tub was gross. All surfaces were visibly dusty. Thousands of fingerprints on the microwave, big stain on one of the bedspreads. There was NO remote for the TV. The desk gave us one to try but it. Didn’t work. The beds linens and towels were nice and clean, beds comfortable.

There was a beyond-dead poinsettia in the lobby with a sign saying "Christmas is about family" during my early October stay. The room door (interior) was filthy, there was toilet paper stuffed in the security peephole, and the security latch was entirely broken and non-functional. These are all easy fixes, ergo it seems the management does not care and/or is not paying any attention.

The main problem with this hotel was an overwhelming, caustic odor, probably from the incorrect use, or overuse, of cleaning products. It was everywhere, in the lobby, the hallways, and the rooms. At first, I expected that the odor would diminish after the cleaning crew left, but it did not. The odor persisted all day and all night and greeted us every single time we entered the hotel and our room over our four day stay. I am not exaggerating when I say it hurt my lungs and gave me headaches. The carpets were quite old and filthy, especially on the stairs and in the hallways. The floor of the bathroom was slick and left a sticky residue on my socks and the bottom of my shoes. I can only assume that they were trying to hide the filth with "clean" smells. Either that, or they were misusing the cleaning products. Perhaps they are meant to be diluted and they were using the products at full strength. I suggest that the owners and management stop trying to cover up the filth with excessive cleaning products and just move directly to renovation or tear down. We have been home for ten days, but despite constant airing out, I can still detect that disgusting odor in our luggage. In the past, we have had good experiences at Quality Inn and Suites, but I think the brand has been permanently damaged in my mind. Since this hotel meets their standards, I don't know if I will ever risk staying in one of their hotels again.

The girl at the check in desk was extremely kind, but honestly the positive review stops there. The worst offense to me was the ton of overbearing pine tree air fresheners, you know, the kind you hand from your rearview mirror? The "black ice" scent was WAY overwhelming, especially when we walked in to our room and there were three of them sticking out from the top of our mirror to (I guess) freshen up the room? Also, one of the headboards was all kinds of warped, the bathtub had wierd black stuff in it (dirt? tiny bugs?), the sockets for the lamp were broken, the hallways had a STRONG smell of marijuana, etc. Again, they were super nice there - they obviously cared very much about what they were doing, I would just spend a little more and stay somewhere that had a better rating next time.

We were put on the second floor and there was no elevator. My sister has trouble climbing stairs, especially with luggage. The staff did not offer to help or to change our room to bottom floor. She just watched my sister struggle.

I couldn't gain access to my room after returning in the evening. I was scheduled to check out the next day. I'm not going to stay at another Quality Inn. This also happened at another Quality Inn in New England. The coffee was misleading because, it was dark but tasted like water. The waffle mix was too thick, and the syrup was not sweet enough. Sausage links were gray and uncooked. I also heard noise in my room. I don't know if it was the a/c heating system or construction. The stairway carpet needs to be updated.

Where do I start? There was black mold in the bathroom on the wall and at the bottom of the tub there was holes in the walls. There was clip toenails on the sofa when I pulled it out for the sofa bed. There was a drip pan underneath the kitchen sink to catch the water that was dripping. There was absolutely no dishes or should I say clean dishes, a.k.a. plasticware in the room the coffee pot was filthy dirty, and had a used coffee pod in it holes in the walls. The people that are living there not staying there for a short time up all night, slamming doors, smoking pot banging on walls floors I have stayed at several motels at least monthly for the past 15 years and never been in such a filthy place or felt uncomfortable going outside I don’t wanna say uncomfortable unsafe The room was so filthy dirty that we chose not to eat breakfast that was provided in our room cost because we didn’t know how dirty the kitchen was so we ate elsewhere.

This property was a major disappointment. It is interesting that different properties under the same chain’s banner could offer such different experiences. I understand that they are likely independently owned, but I’d think the Quality Inn brand would have some minimum standards. We stayed the night before this at a Quality Inn in Northampton, MA, and had a lovely experience, then came to South Portland and were sorely disappointed. I won’t go into all the deficiencies of the room, but the standout experience was being told that the hot water dispenser at the lobby coffee and tea setup was not available other than at breakfast. This was a first for us. The staff member who imparted this news was quite sullen and seemed angry that my wife wanted to make a cup of tea upon our arrival in the evening. The general tone of the facility was one of all the things that we were not to do. Hardly welcoming. While we are not inclined to give up on Quality Inn properties, we will spend more time studying the reviews in the future. Beware!
