The building itself is impressive, set on the seafront behind a charming garden. The public rooms are appealing, and our family room was clean and comfortable. Like many hotels of its age, it feels a little dated, but the price is excellent and the staff are genuinely lovely. Breakfast was very good, though the evening menu was limited. The Isle of Bute is stunning, but clearly geared toward day visitors—plenty of cafés open during the day, but few options for eating out in the evening, leaving the hotel as the main choice. If you like mashed potato, you’ll be delighted; children will be equally well supplied with chips. The menu is small, the food competently prepared, but the style feels stuck in 1985. The venison casserole was enjoyable, but much else was rather beige. The risotto, however, was frankly poor—an oily, garlicky muddle of rice with thick slabs of melted Parmesan and a token rocket garnish. The hotel has both a formal dining room and more relaxed bar dining, which would be perfect for separate menus—one more traditional, the other lighter and more contemporary, with an emphasis on salads, seafood, and modern cooking.

To say the hotel is tired is an understatement, it must have been stunning in its day but that was a long time ago. It[s a beautiful old building, fantastic location, but needs a serious amount of money spent on it which I’m not sure is commercially viable. A shame.

This place has so much character. We both felt the beds were the best we slept on during our month-long UK holiday. Under repair and renovation as of 7/25. Can't wait to go back!

Disappointing stay, but staff were great

Booked large room with sea view, room size was great, deco was a little dated, tired looking and the bed a little hard. The bathroom was clean but the shower wasn’t very powerful. Unfortunately the hotel was undergoing building works (wasn’t aware of this at time of booking) with the window in our room being blocked by scaffolding & waste shoot which spoilt the view and disturbed the peaceful setting I’d been looking forward to. Staff were friendly and breakfast the next morning was lovely.

Hotel was nice, but every carpet needed cleaning, very heavily stained and dirty. Also worth being aware that there are a lot of steps up to the hotel so we had to carry a pram up the steps to get in and out each day. If there is an accessible route, we didn’t see one and nobody told us of one.

A lovely, Victorian, grand hotel. We really enjoyed our stay. Great staff, food, room and view. A very quiet nights sleep, even though the hotel was busy. We'd definitely return. Thank you to all the staff.
