Quaint and close to Pelourinho
The staff was great, the rooms are very small, extremely well located. However, BEWARE breakfast is not included and we were surprised with a bill we were not warned. The staff never ever said anything at check-in and their promo makes reference to all services included. It was not about the cost because breakfast was great and the cook really friendly and caring this was about surprising us with hidden charges.

a gem in the rough
The staff were exceptionally friendly. They would go out of their way to help you - even when they didn't speak any english. The staff made the experience - I remember wanting something sweet and the restaurant staff gave me a sample of two sweets. I ended up ordering both. LOL. The area is kind of questionable even during the day. I did walk from there two or three times, but was very on guard. At night it is kind of seedy. The location is my biggest complaint. I needed to get cash. the security person told me I could walk, but I couldn't find the location. They happily called a cab who waited for me and brought me back from the Baco de Brazil security in the lobby. Salvador was probably my favorite city in Brazil. The tours from the property were priced well ( $50 US or RS 165 for 8 hours between two tours with pay your own buffet lunch). They helped make sure I saw everything I wanted to see plus some. The wifi was really solid, but you need a separate code for each device. The rooms are pretty small but sufficient. The rooms were clean. The price is great...

Nice hotel
The hotel was surprisingly nice. It does not look like much outside, but the rooms are clean and up to date. The lobby area is good to sit in and relax. The Wifi worked fine. The place has all you need. I was pleased.

Nice and stylish.
Nicely decorated, cozy room, fantastic breakfast. The surroundings are a bit shabby but well, Salvador is like that. It's a 5 min walk to Pelourinho but most people would recommend taking a taxi.

A gem in the middle of the city
The hotel is amazing, helpful staff and great breakfast. The hotel has a lot of charecter and history, just around the corner lots of street restaurants with a verity of of traditional food. Highly recommended to those who like history and don't care much about the neighbourhood.

Located on the edge of the Old Town
The hotel is located on the edge of the Old Town and only 300 metres walk to the elevator connecting the upper and lower levels of the Old Town. The hotel service was excellent. Very helpful with suggestions for day activities and how to walk to the Old Town. The square the hotel faces is also fronted by a university building. The walk to the Old Town is through a very run down area, but the locals are friendly and will warn you to keep your cameras etc secure. Walking during the day is safe but the Hotel stongly recommends a taxi at night. If you want to be close to the Old Town and not at one of the beaches and having to spend 30 minutes or more in traffic as well as see how the locals live then this hotel is ideal.

need to take in account: location
I found the hotel and the staff very nice and welcoming. The hotel is located in walking distance with historic site. However the plaza in front has children begging for money and men sleeping on street all day. My family didn't feel comfortable walking around and to the hotel and ended up taking taxi every time we went out. Very kind and helping staff though.

We thought the hotel was great - really friendly & much more spacious than the photos suggest. Sadly the surrounding area is very run down - like much of Salvador. The Pelourinho is a 5/10 min walk but the road is very dirty & you wouldn't walk after dark. But having said that, Pelourinho is still very much worth a visit & we very much enjoyed our time there.

the hotel is located in a bas side of town, coming in and coming out by taxi is recommended. We would recommend this hotel to other people who want to experience the old side of Salvador

Lovely Oasis in Salvador
A Casa das Portas Velhas is a beautiful, colonial boutique hotel. It is a 3 minute walk from the great historic centre of Salvador, Pelourinho. Unfortunately, it is situated on a slightly dodgy street. All that means is that from 6pm onwards, we took taxis to and from the hotel. During the day, we walked without any problems. The hotel really is an oasis from reality, elegant and well decorated. However, the biggest asset of the hotel is the staff. Every member of staff greets you with a smile and will bend over backwards to help your stay be the best it can possibly be. The housekeeping staff are so elegant and happy, it makes you smile just walking by them and saying hello in the corridor. Upon arrival, the barman greets you with a soothing, cold drink and the staff at the concierge desk, who all speak perfect English, will answer any questions and give you a tour of the hotel and its history. We were lucky enough to get upgraded from a standard room to the master suite due to some "problem" or other, which was incredible seeing as it was my boyfriend's 30th birthday! Finally, the hotel offers the best breakfast we have had in 2 months of touring South America: an amazing selection of fresh tropical fruits, cereals, homemade granola, cakes, breads, greek yoghurt, delicious scrambled eggs (always tricky at a buffet breakfast...) and cheese and ham. Completely worth paying extra for! On the flip side, there is no room service or food available after 8pm, so you do need to plan for dinner elsewhere, and as you need to call a cab and can't just walk outside, it's something you need to keep in mind. Conclusion: we loved it here and would definitely return!

Home away from Home
I am a very frequent traveler and have stayed at many places and this was an amazing boutique hotel, friendly welcoming staff, very clean and the decor and art work is lovely. The breakfast was wonderful and had a large variety of fruits, breads and sweets. The ladies that run the kitchen are happy to prepare anything specific that you may want and made us special little treats for the day we departed. The back patio is open air and great place to lounge and have a cocktail. They have access to good tour guides and we loved our time spent there. Just a note to those that are taller in stature, the triple room has 3 twin beds which is they are comfortable and room is well appointed but tall folks may want to opt for rooms with bigger beds.

Botique Hotel
If you like botiques, rather than chains, this is definitely the place for you. The hotel has a unique flair due to its decore and ambiance. My room was a bit small but very comfortable, and it and the bathroom were very clean. Best of all, the staff give highly personalized service - everyone seem to know who I was soon after I checked in. Do wander around the hotel, as there are little nooks and cranies here and there where you can plop down and read or watch TV. They have a breakfast spread in the morning, but be sure to ask the waitresses for anything special you want, like eggs or whatever. Also, while the hotel is actually quite near many toursit sites, it's in a slightly hidden area. My taxi driver from the airport knew exactly where it was, but the front desk told me that you might have to tell a driver its "atras da Guarnicao Mangueira" which is a police barracks. They also told me that the immediate area is not safe after dark, and I should go by cab then. By day it took me a few minutes to get oriented, but once I did I found my way all over the downtown area and the many tourist spots - they are really quite close-by.

Satisfactory guaranteed
The Staff are very friendly and helpful, especially being multilingual. The Staff are more than happy to recommend places to visit and to avoid. The food was great and freshly made. The Hotel/Villa is staffed 24/7 so you will always have their support and a free cab service is available to the near centre which is also a bonus.

the hotel and restaurant in hotel were absolutely wonderful. But the neighborhodd was completely unsafe either in daytime or nightime, so much so tht the hotel provided one RT per day into the historic district, but it took a while to get this free taxi.

Stay away from this hotel. Far away.
We urged Expedia to remove this hotel from the list. It is located in a very unsafe area of town and we are certainly not timid travelers. We rented a car to explore the city. The hotel is in the old part of town, but not the touristy one. It is very diffocult to find and the roads there are in very bad condition. The road to the hotel was full of men loitering, many sleeping on the sidewalk. Military police was very visible in the area with roadblocks and machine guns drawn. And that was all during the day. There was just no way we would stay there, come back at night with the road condition, and the neighborhood the way it was. Stay at the more touristy, but definitely safer resorts along the coast and avoid the area of this hotel at all cost.

A Casa das Portas Velhas - Right Mix
I had travelled to Brazil last year, to Rio and Sao Paulo. Since Salvador was said to be the second most visited location in Brazil, I had to see it. There were many travel reviews warning about the security of Salvador, especially around the Pelourinho. I researched as best I could and decided on Portas Velhas because of the reputed quality of the accomodations and its proximity to the tourist sights. I was very pleased with the hotel. It is in a not so nice part of town, but 'not so nice' is not a big deal to a New Yorker like myself. I and my friend had not problems at all. We never felt threatened or afraid. The Pelourinho, the churches, the museums and especially the cathedral are very well worth the effort to see. Portas Velhas, clean, great staff and fantastic breakfast was always a pleasant place to turn in to after a day of serious sight seeing. The air-conditioning, the elevator and the fine quality bedding are things I think others will appreciate also. I would recommend this hotel. There are people conversant in many languages and their English is superb. You might think a hotel decorated with old doors would be a bit over the top or corny. Come and see, you'll actually like it. Do shop around but believe me, you won't be disappointed with A Casa das Portas Velhas.

The hotel is a gem, very special and unique
We were very pleased by the hotel, its uniqueness, friendliness of staff, size and decoration of rooms. The jacuzzi in the back patio under the stars was a great welcome, after strolling around all day. The breakfasts were extraordinary, specially for me who like mostly fruit in the mornings. Great variety and taste. There is also a fine restaurant for the evenings, a little expensive though.
