No air-conditioning when we stayed and the dogs barking in the valley kept us up all night The fumes from the vents were at times intolerable Nice location Too many foreign workers at the desk who were a bit limited in their knowledge of the area

Views from the hotel (restaurant, rooms) are breath taking. Our room was furnished with rustic furniture but it matches the atmosphere perfectly. Very nice pool. I hope to return some time.

Do NOT stay here if you enjoy good food
Most importantly, the restaurant here is NOT as described online. The website implies it is a proper restaurant making high quality, locally sourced food, but it's not even close... On our first night we walked down into the town (easy 10min walk, although a bit steep) and had a great meal at "La Cueva". On our second night everything in town was closed so we opted for the buffet in the hotel, and it was awful. It was the epitome of quantity over quality. Just really not good at all. If you stay here hoping for decent meals you will be disappointed. The room itself was large, but the bathroom tiny, even in a so called Junior Suite. The whole place smelt of drains. It was also very noisy, with little soundproofing between rooms. WiFi is free only in the lobby, and is too slow for anything except checking email. Using mobile data was much quicker. On a positive note, the location and views are absolutely spectacular, and it is a great base for hiking. Just make sure you can eat somewhere else!!

Charming hotel, but doesn't quite warrant 4 star
A thoroughly charming hotel but fittings dated and some detail lacking. Looks like it was styled in the 1970s and not updated. Limited room facilities, a kettle and tea but no milk or coffee provided, no minibar, poor tiling and grouting in bathroom, formica-faced flimsy sliding door to bathroom, no soap or other conveniences, no room service, sliding window to outside terrace doesn't lock (and easy access to the terrace from outside), rather industrial catering, Internet access slow and intermittent (and costs €6 a day).

The restaurant appears to be ok but 2 of are party of 6 spent two days in bed with food poisoning and was at appoint of seeking medical advice. There wasn't a hotel manager to speak to and staff where unhelpful. We where there for 7 nights the area is nice but to get anywhere in under an hour its almost impossible due to the roads. The spa is never attended and not clean children not watched at all when in the pool general unsafe.

Heavenly Location
What a beautiful place this is. Views across the mountains and a lvely reception and bar area. Utterly peaceful. Each room has it's own sit on balcony with mountain views. Perfectly located for all the best hikes and with a lovely spa, sauna, pool etc and good, cold beer to come back to. This is a laid back place. Confortable but no uneccesary swank. ie fine to go to the restaurant in your hiking boots if you so choose. Great breakfasts, good coffee, but the dinner buffet is not so good.

Great hotel for hiking and hiding
The hotel is perfectly located for daily hiking. You jump on the 10:30 bus to Tejeda and then hop off somewhere on the way and then catch the 17:00 bus back from Tejeda somewhere along the way. There are a couple of circular routes available as well. Great massage, super friendly staff. The meat counter at the buffet was very good. Better than in a five star beach hotel. I like sleeping in cold and struggled a bit with the aircon. When I wasn't too tired and was anxious I could also hear dogs barking, but hey that's why they are called Canary islands. The hotel has very nice lounge/lobby area where I spent a lot of time reading while enjoying beautiful scenery. Walls of the hotel are covered in framed mirrors. My interpretation is that you ought to look into yourself while on holiday which I did. Great place to stay. I could easily give three or five stars, it is a state of mind, not of the hotel.

Could be so much better
It's not far but about 75 minutes from the airport due to the roads. Stunning location and friendly staff. However we were given a WiFi code that turned out to be the paid version at an eye watering six Euros per device per day (there is a free version in public areas). The room was fake rustic but has all you'd need except the double bed which turned out to be twin beds. However the air conditioning only produced hot air and although there is a kettle, it's completely random whether the tea bags will be refreshed each day and there is no milk. The spa is adequate - good pool, atmospheric interior but the Jacuzzi has seen better days. The only food option (there are no nearby restaurants open at present) is a buffet which is not good and you'll end up smelling of cooking. Food is tasteless or swimming in oil. Often lukewarm at best and sometimes with little or no choice of vegetables. Plates will be whisked away before you've finished chewing, drinks may or may not arrive and a large beer may be only three quarters full or to the brim depending on the server. We came to dread it after several days. With some better catering management this could be a much better and they've got a captive market. Overall a mixed experience but it would be recommendable if they sort out the food. However it's not a four star as claimed; the standard is probably three star and that's reflected in the prices

Mountain hotel with amazing views
Spent a couple of nights here to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel and staff are very welcoming. We had a room with a 4 poster bed the room it's self was lovely great views and spacious our only disappointment was the bath room very small shower cubical with doors hanging off / hard to close and towel rail failing away from wall. For a 4 star hotel you expect those little wash bottles but you only get dispenser on wall. Restaurant was great at breakfast and evening meal and wine is a good price from 11euro a bottle. Don't know why people complained on TA about food. Note lots of dogs and other animals in the mountains so you do get barking and various animal noises but if you in a city hotel you get traffic noise. I prefer the animal noises. Spa really nice to chill out steam room was out of order during our stay that was a shame. Pool lots of beds and very quiet to lay back and read or listen to your head phones. Location in mountains you do need a car the village is a 15 mins walk down but a lot longer back very steep hill note bars in village close around 10pm.

Improved since last year
This is the second time we have stayed here and this year the catering was better than last year [although last year wasn't bad]. Unfortunately it is closing for 6 months in May and when it reopens it is being block booked by a German travel company. Excellent location however and very pleasant stay again.

Location location
High quality very attractive remote hotel perched on a mountainside. Views! Ideal location for outdoor activities (hiking, hill cycling). Nice pool and spa. As per other reviews - disappointing food quality. Breakfasts just adequate. Buffet dinners good for sportsfolk who can use the eat-all-you-can. Cafeteria style cuisine. Self service and expensive. Also had a bad case of the all night Spanish yapping dogs problem. Earplugs!

Fantastic alternative to the busy beach areas
We stayed here lured by the pictures and the location did not disappoint - amazing views of the mountains and valleys. The drive up/down is not for the faint of heart - very skinny cliff roads with many switch-backs and need to look out for bikers and locals passing you (and barely enough space for two cars most of the way) - but it is worth it (including the drive if you are able to relax enough to enjoy it). The hotel is by itself perched above the very small San Bartolome village, and there is little to do up there other than enjoy the view, hike/bike, or take advantage of the hotel facilities (with a very nice spa, pool, gym, and tennis courts). We preferred to drive down to the shore during the day (takes around 30 minutes due to the roads) and escape to the mountains for the evening. As many on here have said, the food is not great, especially the buffet (which should be expected - not sure there is such a thing as a "good" buffet). However, ordering a la carte, the food is much better and likely cheaper than the buffet anyways. So, steering clear of the buffet dinner (breakfast is standard European buffet and is perfectly acceptable), there is little not to like about the place. Bed could have been a bit more comfortable, room was lacking in a few ways (no wireless - only in the lobby area, no corkscrews, very small tv), but all forgivable given the location (and that it's Europe, where few hotels have the standard amenities Americans are used to getting in decent hotels).

Nice quiet hotel in the mountains
Hotel Rural Paradise was a really nice quiet hotel up in the mountains relatively close to hiking routes. The hotel room had a spectacular view to the mountains and the sea. We also really enjoyed the warm swimming pool outside and the spa. The only downside was the really poor quality of food at the restaurant. I really would not recommend anyone to eat there since the food (a la carte) was pretty much unedible. The breakfast was not too bad. It really was a shame that the restaurant was this level while otherwise the hotel was so nice.

Location, location, location!
Not by any means a 5 star hotel it is nevertheless very comfortable with good facilities and the most amazing location. very comfortable with efficient, friendly staff and a mile away from typical resort hotels. Rooms clean and all with good views and a fridge not a minibar for a change! Food good but not special and meal offer seriously good value. Must like walking in the hills and lounging by the pool as there is not much nightlife or similar activities. Gym and pool good. We will be back!
