The worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid this hotel. I had a single room in the South Wing, which I knew would be no-frills, but I wasn't prepared for how dirty and run-down the room and the hotel would be. The carpet in the corridor leading to the room was dirty and stained, as was the one in the room. The blanket on the bed had white marks on it. The sink and toilet were filthy and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a while with a layer of grime round the top of the toilet. There was mould on the toilet ceiling. The heater in the room was broken and couldn't be turned down so was blasting heat constantly, and even with the window open the room was stiflingly hot. I felt genuinely uncomfortable touching anything in the room and ended up sleeping on the towel on top of the bed sheets rather than get into the bed. The staff were friendly enough when you could speak to them but there was always a big queue and a tiny reception for such a big hotel and it seemed to take two members of staff to process anything at reception. Honestly the worst experience I've ever had in a hotel. This still cost not far off £100 which is shocking for such horrendous treatment.
Staff were extremely professional and friendly, plus the initial check in lounge is nice if dated.
Conditions in the rest of the hotel are abysmal, the single lift to the dungeon of a basement was out of service to get to my room and working out how to get there in the labyrinth of stairs and hallways was terrible. I feel for anyone who had accessibility issues this weekend gone.
The smell of the hotel was horrendous, I’ve been to festival toilets that were more pleasant! Also someone had thrown up on the stairs and they barely cleaned it so the entirety of that staircase smelled like vomit for my stay.
Room was clean enough, aside from the dusty skirting boards. A shame the bath enamel was peeling away and two of the lights didn’t work in the room or else it would have actually been okay.
Also, letting off my fire alarm to do a maintenance check at 2am one night was really really ridiculous.

I like the grand tbh but this stay was was the worst could only get a room no window stuck in a corner & it smelt FCUKING horrid noisy toilet etc & the food wasn't much good either Oh I'll book the Grand again but not without a window in a rank smelling basement although not all the basement stank just the corner I got lumbered with
I booked over a year ago and there was nothing on my info to say i needed ID I only found this out when I arrived and of course I did not have ID thankfully the staff were ok about it but if they were not k would be in trouble
The hotel is really outdated I’m not looking for a 5 star experiance but hot water for a bath would be nice

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
We really enjoyed it the staff was very friendly and great location
We tuned up and waited to book in and in that time two people in front of us we're waiting to complain about conditions. We already knew that the room didn't have a window, but didn't realise there would be no ventilation at all!. It was boiling and felt very claustrophobic because of this, we managed to find a table fan but it was broken so had to take the front of it for it to work, the room smelt awful as well as the hallway into the room. The extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work either. Breakfast was very poor standard and not worth the extra money. I wasn't expecting too much but for £120 a night was very disappointed with the standard of the room. Nothing grand about our stay!.
Parking was a large issue outside the hotel. Many guest had parking tickets over the weekend, Police were at the hotel on 2 of the 3 nights i stayed there dealing with issues at the door way. Great views from then terrace though and room of the sea, restaurant prices were very reasonable. Very close to the beach and town.
We stayed for 2 nights. A comfortable place, but needs a lot of decorating. The age of the hotel, and lack of upkeep, lets it down. But, not the worst Britannia Hotel, I’ve stayed at.
Yes, I would stay, again. At the price I paid, I knew it wasn’t going to be a 5 star.
great access to main town centre and beach. cheap and cheerful town and great base for a wider area Whitby, Bridlington york driffield and more
i was in roon sl05 clean tidy small room but nice other than bed time. the emergency green light was that bright it was impossible to sleep and walls to thin. rooms and hotel not as bad as lots say its pot luck what room you get but most have been refitted and remember its a two Star hotel and its cheap.if you want better pay more somewhere else.dont morn

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Stopped here a few times now but was disappointed as we had a room booked got checked in ok went to our room only to find no electricity and a massive leak coming through the ceiling went back to reception they moved us to another room theses rooms should have been cleaned and checked before we went in
The hotel was very run down and unclean. The smells throughout the hotel were awful but the worst smell was in the blue lift. I ended up having to walk up and down between the 4 floors as it made me feel sick.

Don't stay here!
Not good. The hotel foyer is 'Grand' the rest of the hotel is run down and needs renovating. There was no hot water from the taps or shower in our room and after reporting the issue to reception in the morning nothing had changed when we returned to the room in the evening.
We stayed for 2 nights - managed to have a pleasant stay despite the hotel's many shortcomings.
Room was okay; the 6th floor used to be the staff's quarters - take from that what you will! Brilliant view though. Check in was incredibly tedious, took longer than necessary and felt pressured into buying breakfast in advance. Said breakfast was sub par to put it politely.
The ladies toilets downstairs were both without locks or handles, and the gents were out of order - a perfect recipe for disaster. The staff had an air of indifference about them. There are no luggage storage facilities post check out and it boggles the mind to fathom that such a "grand" building would not have this option.
Speaking of grand, the communal areas are impressive, but one could just pop in off the street and admire them and then stay in any number of better hotels within walking distance.
Don't be fooled by its self-proclaimed grandness!
