All staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. We were travelling with the dog; ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel bar rather than the restaurant with the dog which is totally the right move as not everyone is happy around dogs. Lovely room. If I was being picky, the shower head could have done with being replaced but for 1 night, it was totally fine.

This was a very costly stay in which we were shocked by the unwelcoming reception on arrival. We arrived at 3.20 pm (most places check in at 3 pm). It was apparently 4 pm here - that’s their policy, but it’s how you treat a customer when you notify them. We rarely come early but the route just worked that way. Polite request to check in was met with a hostile “check in is at 4 pm, you can come back then”. No explanation and no courtesy as four of them just sat there looking at me like an inconvenience. Had to go back to the car and wait until we watched another couple allowed in just before 4 pm. We followed at 4 pm. I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels, but in the hospitality industry, I’ve never had this. No thank you. The accommodation itself (a 3 bedroom townhouse) was a fair way away from the main hotel, but decent enough although very old and dated. The initial attitude however ruined our stay and we couldn’t wait to leave. Sadly unable to recommend this venue with that reception.

On our road trip around Scotland, we stayed at McKays Hotel in Wick and were pleasantly surprised by the experience. While the hotel has a slightly dated charm, it more than makes up for it with outstanding service and hospitality. The staff were incredible – warm, welcoming, and attentive – making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Service throughout our stay was impeccable. Although the rooms were on the smaller side, they were clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully appointed with everything we needed for a relaxing stopover. Overall, McKays Hotel provided a cosy and accommodating stay with truly exceptional staff. A great choice for travellers exploring the beautiful northern Highlands.

Older hotel that needs love

This hotel was easy to find and street parking available. The town is very small and especially dead on a Sunday. The walls of the hotel were crumbling, so clearly old and needed some love, but the bed was comfortable. We ate dinner here also and did not find the quality to be the best. I would not eat there again.

Weathering the storm

It was good, nice staff very helpful, unfortunately I had a room which was into the wind during storm Floris and a fair bit of water came in above the bathroom window, I did report it but there was nothing that could be done at the time. Hopefully it will be fixed for future residents. Bistro food was very good and definately recommend the Fish and chips and Scallops 👍

We had to book this very last minute due to an issue with the original accommodation so when we turned up they were still sorting out our room which was no problem but hotels.com actually had the wrong info listed on the website and the room didn’t have kitchen facilities as described. The lady who checked us in offered us the townhouse that they have instead, we had to pay extra but at this point we just wanted somewhere to stay so we paid it. The townhouse was actually wonderful, we felt so safe and comfortable unlike the previous place. Kitchen facilities were great, the bedrooms were lovely and comfortable and the courtyard was nice to have access to. The furniture and decor is dated and they still have a DVD and CD player, no Netflix etc on the TV so they could do with updating things especially for the money it cost for one night. Overall though it was very nice and we would happily stay there again and recommend to others.
