Quirky Pub with rooms, lots of little eating area's and a large beer garden, bedroom was clean and tidy set just inside the city walls. Breakfast was freshly made and excellent and the food menu was varied and reasonable.
Bar area is a little small and fills up at busy times , apart from that no other issues.
Beautiful room lots of character. Tasty breakfast and friendly staff. The only downside was our room was the 4th floor and steep stairs could be an issue with mobility.
We loved the view outside our window of the old city gate, it was so close we felt we could reach out the window and touch it!. The room was comfortable and the staff helpful. Would recommend for an atmospheric stay.
We loved our stay once we found it as had problems accessing it by car in the dark, no parking and need to use carpark quite a distance to walk from the hotel.
The room was quirky and the bed very comfortable and cosy. Staff were very helpful and food lovely.
Only stayed one night but staff were very kind and it’s in a great location. The building is beautiful and the bed was really comfy. The pub has a great beer garden too. One thing to say (& this is common for the architecture across York) is that the doorways can be quite small and a bit of a hazard if you’re tall!
This was a very cute and fun place to stay at the end of our trip to England. The staff is so friendly and our room was comfortable. The spaces in the hallways were quite tight, but we enjoyed the rustic feel of the place and our English breakfasts. Very convenient to sightseeing, as it is right down the block from incredible York Minster.

Great pub!
Had an overnight stay at the Fat Badger. Lovely service and good food and great location but not great sleep. Late night revelry and early morning keg deliveries make not for a good night’s sleep. Better glass in windows could help!

Room was fine, though bathroom had a smell of damp in it. Location was great for city centre but it was really noisy. Bin wagon at 5am outside room, street sweeper at 6am, bottle bank at 7am!

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Disliked: Amenities
So, so disappointed! Thought it would be a treat to stay in this old charming building. The room was so small we had to crawl across the bed to sleep and bathroom was down a long dark hallway. Very dark decor and poor lighting. The worst part was the NOISE! On a main street just inside the old Roman gate where the party crowd congregate. Horrible noises from garbage collectors and those stocking the bar rolling and banging metal kegs in the wee hours. While convenient to the old city, resist the temptation to stay here, I am so sorry to say.
