The hotel is very picturesque and characterful. The room was well appointed and decorated. You can eat downstairs in the pub and there was a good menu choice and a range of ales and lagers. Our food was very tasty. Breakfast options are limited.
Very interesting stay in view of the storm the hotel was closed initially without electricity! But it came back and the owners were brilliant in providing an evening meal for us and 4 other guests
We stayed for one night with our dog. Lovely refurbished room, nice bar and a pleasant meal. Unfortunately a noisy fan which came on every 15 minutes all night kept us awake.
We have just spent a three night stay at the Devonshire Arms. It has just changed management and we were welcomed by a warm and friendly team. The room was a good size with a wonderful power shower and had modern decor. We ate twice in the pub and the meals were lovely and very reasonably priced. I would recommend the Devonshire and its the perfect place for a base to explore the area.
The Devonshire is set in a very small village in the heart of the Peak district. Check is done at the pub bar but we were greeted very warmly by the server and everything was ready for us. There are only 3 rooms upstairs. Ours was very nice, clean and had views of the back of the property. The only negative thing I could say was the wifi did not work in our room and we both had zero phone signal so we were cut off from the world, but we quite enjoyed having a phone free stay. It did work in the bar downstairs. Dinner was really good, typically pub classics but done very well and clearly freshly cooked, not bought in. The bartender was really chatty and quirky, he was constantly talking to everyone but not in an annoying way, extremely pleasant and attentive. There is not a lot in Hartington except the pub, 1 hotel and a few small shops but I would stay again as its one of the prettiest places to stay, and only a short drive from other hot spots.
Nice country pub. Awesome breakfast. Great service. Awesome location for hiking!! The area gets quite busy over the weekends...

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Lovely bed & bedding, nice biscuits & chocolates. Fancy (empty) water bottle by bed - yes I can fill from bathroom tap but I am supposedly paying for a “luxury” room so it should be provided; no water glasses either. No luggage rack for suitcase. Bathroom toiletries good but no shelf in shower. Towels very skimpy. Breakfast not included but can be had for 8.95. Poached eggs & toast nice, bacon cheap & tough, coffee undrinkable. Better value and quality to be had at farm shop cafe 100yds down the road. You can’t put meals/bar on room tab but have to pay as you go. However the staff were lovely.

We had a few days stay here just recently and have to say the room was really comfortable with a nice en-suite bathroom and a really comfortable bed, we slept well on all 3 nights. Minor negative points were that after day 1, the heating wasn't working in the room so no heated towel rail, and the TV was rather small. We found having our evening meal was a little strange as we were told we'd need to book a table but when we went to the restaurant we were directed to a reserved table in the bar which is fine but nobody told us we had to order at the bar so we sat waiting to be served like a couple of lemons for a while until the penny dropped! Once we realised it was ok, and when we knew the drill for the following 2 nights all was well. Although its a fairly limited menu, the food was very nice although we never actually got as far as desserts due to the generous portions. Plus point was a pretty good wine list and I particular barman who made us feel at home.
This recently refurbished pub with rooms is nice but at £198 for two nights I expected more:
No robes/slippers in room yet advertised
No bottled water or glasses ditto
Ran out of beer on Saturday night
Came down for breakfast on Sunday tables and floor still dirty from night before
Staff seemed inexperienced and overwhelmed
I booked expecting a level that did not deliver
