Outside of staying at the Empress overlooking the harbour, I cannot think of a better accommodation in Victoria. You step out onto the walking stretch of Government Street with shoppes galore and very limited traffic sound all day and night. The rooms have been managed but still definitely maintain their antique character (I quite enjoyed their European vibes). We stayed long enough to interact with a few different staff; all were helpful and some extremely so (case in point: our tv didn’t work, so the front desk threw us in a larger suite that was available where we got a few more perks to boot). I highly recommend looking for a fireplace suite between October and April; having a cozy, controlled bonfire in an urban surrounding truly is a treat. 1940s luxury at its finest.

The location of the hotel is its asset. Moreover I could check in late with a super staff. But I was surprised to see that they’re asking for 100$ caution refundable in 3-5 days. I slept very well, and I would recommend this hotel that isn’t so expensive (~90-100$/n).

Be aware that it's above a loud bar. If you get the room directly above it; the bed literally vibrates with the music and the walls are so thin that you can make out what people are shouting in the bar. It's pretty derelict and quirky, but the location is great. And it was very clean which I appreciated. Bring ear plugs for sure; I would've been super angry about it if i wasn't exhausted. And the street its on is closed at times for pedestrians only, which would've been useful knowledge before arriving. Overall for the low rate at christmas time, I was happy.

Not a safe area. Tweakers lying in the street less than a block away and regularly loitering at the front door. Spitting and yelling. The area is really losing itself to the unhoused population. So very sad because it used to be a safe and beautiful area. I didn’t even want my adult kids walking out past 10pm. Also It was very loud at night until 1:30am due to the nearby pubs so don’t expect good sleep. It’s an older building so the hot water works on its own convenience. Beds are very uncomfortable. But the staff were amazing, accommodating and nice. Unfortunately we will not be back.
