I’d say overall that staff are 5 star but the property is extremely run down. Theres no reason for simple things like the tea bag holder to look like it’s 10 years old. Unfortunately it’s not worth the price tag, there are better places to stay in DC.

Extremely disappointing stay — Expedia corporate, please contact us. After driving six hours, we checked into our suite and found the room at 78°. The AC would not work. The mini fridge also did not work, despite us having perishable food. We were told nothing could be done until the next day. We requested another room and were told none were available. The problems continued: the bathtub drain was completely blocked and immediately filled with water when turned on. I had to get a plunger from the front desk and fix it myself. The shower curtain rod was broken, paint was on the floor, the remote was held together with foam tape, the vanity door and toilet paper holder were broken, and bugs were coming from the sink drain. The TV did not work properly, there were not enough towels or bedding/pillows for our third guest, and some towels had what appeared to be blood stains. Both elevators had problems with the doors and incorrect floor indicators. We repeatedly contacted the front desk and manager but were told repairs would happen the following day. We asked for a bill adjustment and were told to go through Expedia. The hotel offered only a 15% discount on a future stay. After this experience, we have no interest in returning. We are asking Expedia corporate to contact us regarding a refund/appropriate compensation for this stay.

The staff were polite. However, my door didn’t lock properly, 2/3 locks worked but the deadbolt did not. I was solo traveling for the first time and I let the front desk know this and told them I didn’t feel safe. They said they would have someone check on it. Maintenance went to my room while I was out and apparently had said it was fixed. It was not, they told me they would send someone else up within 15 minutes, no one came until I called after 45 minutes. The lady told me that the lock was not meant to fully lock which didn’t make sense to me. She reassured me that it was a safe hotel and that I would be okay. I asked to switch rooms and they told me that no other rooms were available due to them being cleaned. I asked if rooms would be available the next day and was told no. I ended up checking out of the hotel the next morning and requested a refund. They refunded me a little over half of my total cost even though I only stayed 1 out of 3 nights. I will emphasize that the staff was friendly and patient but they were not able to fix any of my concerns. I take safety very seriously and accommodating to guest safety should be top priority. I also found some makeup stains on my pillow but it didn’t bother me as much as the lock.

Lovely little boutique hotel. The lobby, restaurant and other public spaces have a really cool 1930's Art Deco vibe that I just love! The entire staff was kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend the Royal Sonesta to anyone and plan to return here in the future!
