With easy access to beaches plus everything nearby Tampa has to offer, St. Pete is a great base of operations on Florida's Central West Coast. Home to several worthwhile museums, it has plenty of culture of its own, and the walkable downtown and easy-going vibe is just right for laid-back vacationers.

Let's start with the museums: The impressive Salvador Dali Museum showcases the largest collection of the artist's famously surreal art outside of Spain. Other niche museums include the Chihuly Collection of glass art and the Florida Holocaust Museum. And the worthwhile St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts has a collection that is as broad as the others are deep.

The main commercial area fronts a harbor complete with tourist pier, but if you want a proper white-sand beach, head just a few miles east to St. Pete Beach, with cute little Pass-a-Grille at its southern tip. Or, just 15 miles southwest of town, Fort Desoto Park has a picnic area, trails, bike and kayak rentals, and two piers.
