Keeping it sweet ‘n’ simple like Carolina-style BBQ, Charleston is royalty when it comes to southern charm. From the old brick architecture to the Spanish moss draped on hundreds-of-years-old oaks, the Lowcountry is top dog for lovely sightseeing.

When you book your Charleston hotel deal and get to this South Carolina charmer of a city, you’ll be fixin’ to dig into all the major attractions: Recharging with a stroll along the Battery, shopping like a royal on King Street, and tasting the pimento cheese spreads at the Charleston Farmers Market. But if you’re really ready to roll deep in the Holy City, you have to expand your sunset-laden horizons. Y’all come back now, ya’ hear?

A Charles-Ton of Things to Do

South in Your Mouth: Foodies better pack their stretchy-waistband pants when they hit the Charleston scene. There are so many good eats to be had in this town, you could spend weeks sampling them all. Top drool-worthy spots include the buttery namesake goodness of Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit and slurping sea treasures at The Darling Oyster Bar. Husk is award-winning Southern fare that out-of-towners can’t miss—especially the fried chicken skins. And it wouldn’t be a trip to the South without some good ol’ fashioned barbecue at Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ, complete with a banana puddin’ ending. If you need more sweets, the Ultimate Coconut Cake at Peninsula Grill is the cherry on top of delicious Carolina dining.

Bless Your Art: You’ll find the colorful “art” of Charleston all around the city, without even coming close to a museum. This is a vibrant town, and one of its crowing glories is Rainbow Row, the 13 pastel-hued historical homes on East Bay Street. Take in the verdant greens of Charleston at the beautifully cultivated gardens of nearby Middleton Place, and the sparkling blues of the pretty-as-a-beach waves of Sullivan’s Island. And, of course, nature’s finest art—the sunset views from your Charleston hotel on the beach.

The Bold and the Brew-tiful: Beer buffs will find plenty of sippable options in Charleston, with over 25 local breweries dotting the county map. Some of the top-rated craft favorites include Holy City Brewing, Revelry Brewing, and Palmetto Brewing Co. If you’re looking for something a little harder in your imbibing tour, distill it down to High Wire Distilling. Small groups can tour Charleston’s first distillery since prohibition, then tap out at the cypress-paneled tasting room, where you can sample small batches of spirits including gin, whiskey, rum, and vodka.

South Scare-olina: One thing’s for sure when charting your quick getaway to a southern town—there will be creepy times to be found, if you so dare. And with its fair share of old-timey cemeteries and ghost tours, Charleston is no different. Start off with a behind-the-“screams” tour of Old City Jail, where infamous inmates included pirates and Civil War prisoners. Then check out the medical oddities of the Waring Historical Library and the tooth-centric treasures of the Macaulay Museum of Dental History, which features a dental tool made by Paul Revere. After you’ve been weirded out enough, creep back to your downtown Charleston hotel to rest your bones.
